429 cj verification
Hey guys new to this form. I have a question. I am looking at a 73 f100 with a 429cj with a c6 from a t bird in it. Question is how can I prove it is a 429cj and not a 429 or 460 just by looking at it? Everton I've read online shows I'd have to take the pan off or the intake to see the casting numbers. Is there another way of telling?
Thanks

Block casting number is on the passenger side by the starter, should be Dove or D1ve. Head number by exhaust manifold and should be Doer. It should have a Q Jet carb if it is original. If you see a D2OE on the head it is at least has PI heads and they are worth picking up also.

Also you can pull a plug out and look down the hole with a light and see if it has flat top or dish piston if flat top more than likely it's a 429 you will still have to have the numbers off the heads to know if it is a CJ or not

Re: 429 cj verification
I think the CJ's have the small 14mm plugs also, so that's something else to look for. If it has a Dove block and Dove heads it is still worth something, compared to latter 429/460's.

D1VE-AA block is regular 429 must be D1VE-6015-AA to be a CJ block or the DOVE-A block you have to drop the pan to see if it's 4 bolt main or not

Re: 429 cj verification
I didn't think CJ's had 4 bolt mains only SCJ's??? He could also check for adjustable valve train, early CJ's had positive stop rocker studs while later CJ's had fully adjustable valve trains. Intake would be either a D00E-D or D1AE-BA with a spread-bore carb flange. D0VE-A block early CJ had 2 bolt mains, 71 CJ 4 bolt mains. Pic's would help!! As has been said if it came out of a T-bird it isn't likely to be a CJ. many people who don't know mistake a "Thunder Jet" for a Cobra Jet.

Some CJs made it thru with 4 bolt blocks
The head casting numbers is all you need to look at, DOOE-R are the CJ / SCJ castings, and the block should be A DOVE-A

Look for a cast iron tail shaft housing on the C6 also.86_f150 wrote:Hey guys new to this form. I have a question. I am looking at a 73 f100 with a 429cj with a c6 from a t bird in it. Easy things to check
If you cant see a dooe-r on the heads the top valve cover bolt at the front and back is an easy way to check .Remove the bolt if you can stick something like a voltage tester all the way through it is a cj .If not those are std. heads .And a real cj has a Rochester quadrajet on the intake .A super cj will have a holley bolt pattern .The cj and police intercepter heads have screw in studs and guide plates with a ford part number.Good luck most cjs out there now normally aren't .Doug
