Re: 9 inch Detroit Locker?
I bought one off Ebay for a 9" that was claimed to be Nascar but, was not scalloped on the ring gear pad. It went into a 4X4 with 38's. It must have a much stiffer spring than my other Detroit's as it drags the tire on the gravel road where my other's don't. I would think it would be fine for drag racing. I would be sure of bearing size and axle spline count before buying it.

If you want one for the street get a newer Detroit soft locker. They will have SL in the part number. I have one and it is much more mild mannered for the street.

lockers
have bought a couple and the only issue is people think you have a broken axle because of the the clunk clunk when your pulling from the staging lanes to the track have about 11 years on one with no issue. bought a differant one last year for my strange big bearing case and it acts the same way you normally don't here it in the car over the exhaust and I think I saved about 250 on each one. I belive greg pettit ran one in his 9 sec torino if im not mistaken.

Two fold here, every spool or Detroit locker I have owned dragged the tires on pavement/concrete wearing the insides of the tires on approx 30-45^ angle, if your DL's didn't drag the tires on gravel it was either enough leverage from the tires/weight to break it loose or it were not stiff enough IMO, I run an Eaton 35 spline DL in my street car and it does eat tires a bit, but the fix is to accelerate on corners because if it is working it drags the opposing tire under low speed turns, the spool on the street was cracking bearing housings, the locker will break loose under higher loads, with the ability to hook extremely hard in a straight line ...unlike a traction-loc, 4-pin posi, true track, or any other version of a factory locking posi unit the DL is a streetable race capable spool that doesn't eat parts, just tires.
