351C 2v build help Empty 351C 2v build help

Post  torino501 October 13th 2016, 12:35 pm

ive got a 72 torino, pretty much stock rebuilt 351c. found a 4bbl edel performer intake for cheap. wanting to put a cam in this thing. don't want a stall. just want to see what is the biggest drop in cam you guys have used. want to stay with the pedestal rockers, keep the factory springs as well. don't want anything crazy. would like some chop in the cam. im gonna say its an 8.5-1 comp ratio. has the shitty open chamber 2v heads. what do you guys suggest...?

Well my suggestion is a Flat top hyper piston swap to get about a point of compression in it.

Add a custom cam with about I210-E220 .500 lift on a 108

Good valve job and a little bowl blending

Make sure the rockers have steel fulcrums and do a drop in single performance Spring

Add some 1 3/4 headers, a good distributor and a 750 Holley.

Lots of companies sell the inexpensive generic "one-up" street cams which work pretty good.

One Elgin version which I have used several times in earlier stock type 351M engines with just a cam, straight-up timing set and intake change using all stock other hardware is E-1156-P which has a choppy idle and works well in the lower ranges as well.
223/224@.050" - .503"/.508" valve lift - 108 separation - 104 intake center-line.

thanks guys.. yeah I don't want to get to deep in this thing... the heads are the limiting factor. randy with that cam you suggested im assuming springs are a must? I guess I need to pull a valve cover off and see what im working with.

NO ... stock valve springs work fine as long as they resemble the pressures of new stock springs.

Does the 72 have a retarded timing set in it? If so get rid of that.

you know I think they do from the factory. this one has been rebuilt at one time. so I don't know if they went with a straight up timing set or not. had a guy show me a pic of a timing chain set up on a mild build 460 some guy built him. had running issues ect.. he was just showing me build picks. had a mild cam intake ect. had to blow up the crank sprocket area. it was a single key way. I was pretty certain it wasn't a perf chain of any sort. sure enough it was the retarded crank gear. I told him well that aint good. with any perf cam... dumbasses man...

The factory 72 "Q" code CJ cam seemed to work pretty decent, I bet it would come on a little stronger with the 2V heads because of more air speed (velocity) at an earlier RPM.

FRPP multi key index timing chain will offer some tuneability, bottom/top when you get rid of the 4^ retard the cam will wake up...get the dial out.

The 72 CJ cam did work very decent, even better with modifications, my experience straight up gear with a 2V head will come on stronger but it will run out of steam much earlier than a 4V closed head, for low end 2V for high end 4V, match the rest of the components accordingly.

Be careful on compression, you have zero quench on those heads.

They were bad to rattle with the stock compression, if to much advance was in at lower rpms under load.
