598 back from freshen up
Picked my A460 head 598 from the builder today.
Very happy with it. New valve springs, new Danny Bee belt and seals, new rod bolts (ARP 2000 in Scat h-beams). Had the Morel lifters rebuilt.
Just some bright spots:
The Manley NexTek 221424 springs had lost 20 lbs seat and 40 over the nose from 250/800. Not too bad for 3 years old.
The best thing was the bearings. Alky burning engines tend to be pretty rough on bearings. Mine were in great shape. Replaced 2 upper rod bearing halves. That's it. All the mains and rod bearings still had the marks on them from the mic when he measured and installed them 5 years ago. They were perfect, so they went right back in. Not a mark on them! The two upper halves that got replaced were due to a piece of trash getting to them. One had a scratch/streak you could just feel. The had some shiny spots that you could flake off with a thumbnail. Under the spots/flakes were untouched bearing surface. These where a tiny piece of aluminum from somewhere that got in there and was squashed super thin. Didn't hurt the crank at all.
The whole time it's been together it's been on Brad Penn 10W-30 with a Jomar filter. Lem Evans spec'd aluminum pan from Charlie's Oil Pans with a Kasse cast iron rear sump oil pump. Mains were all .033-.035 and rods all .027 ish.
It's also got a Moroso 3 qt oil accumulator. I use to pre-oil for cold starts and also on the run. With my deal in the shutdown the oil pressure drops from 70 down to about 10 or a little under and then rebounds just as fast when the accumulator oil supply hits. Just a couple notes on the accumulator..
1. I run the accumulator hooked up to port above the oil filter. #10 line. Some have said to only run it attached to rear port behind the intake. It's looks like it worked just fine attached up front.
2. I've also been advised to only use it to pre oil with a manual valve and shut it off for the run. Reason being the oil pump will refill the accumulator before supping the bearings once the accumulator is empty. Again, no problems seen with it on all time and an electric valve.
The only bearings that were replaced. Again, the others were prefect.

Very good! I am set up set like you with both of my cars and the oil accumalator installed up front manual valve on all the time! STD volume melling oil pumps stock block combos here with lifter bushings restricted and restricted pushrods.......long shutdown track like bowlingreen oil pressure never drops....short shutdown track where i am on the brakes real hard pressure does drop but never below 30-40 psi and needle bounces a bit and pressure pops right back up very fast....thats how I know the accumalator things is working. Engines always look good during freshen up. VR1-20W-50 WIX/NAPA Gold oil filter-this year switching to Schaffers micromoly oil
