Post  75truck July 10th 2017, 11:00 pm

I am installing a 1987 ZF 5 speed behind my 429.  Going into a 75 f250 Supercab.

Has anyone taken apart a ZF 5?

I am having my welder weld in a 1/2" supporting plate between the ears for the rear transmission mount the ears seem like they need some beefing up
so they will not brake under torque. He said to seperate the rear part of the case.

Here is the ZF 5

So my question is after I remove the back yoke, pull it out, is it fairly easy to pull off the rear part of the transmission, have it welded and put it back on
without too much trouble?

Side note - am using postimg.org for the photos.

If I view your pics when I'm not signed in here they are very small (129px × 180px) and you can't click on them to see a bigger pic. But they will link to bigger pics if I'm signed in.

ZF 5 benind a 429. Empty So how to pull apart?

Post  75truck July 12th 2017, 12:11 am

Is it easy to remove yoke nut, pull yoke out, undo the many rear bolts and just pull the back cover off?

And putting it back together, any tricks?.

Two tips if you are taking tailshaft housing off replace rear seal while you have it apart and there is no gasket on the housing. Do not use a large bead of silicone to seal the housing. Only a very thin line. When these transmissions were assembled the main case and rear housings were measured, and components and shims were selected to obtain the proper thrust clearances. If your sealer is tool thick and the housing not torqued properly you will cause excess clearance.

Google zf5 service manual it should be online. There was a full detailed rebuild tech thread on Full Size Bronco but Photobucket wiped it out. I will look a see if I can find my PDF version of it for you.

Try this link. Should be a link to all my factory ZF docs and more. Make sure to identify properly which ZF5 you have as there are differences. ZF5-S42 and ZF5-S47 were both behind a 460. Data plate on trans will identify it.

Let me know if you have trouble with link. Not use to sharing links to my files.
Thought I saved a PDF of the rebuild tech article but can't find it this late at night, but here is link to original thread without pics of course.

I found my PDF of the rebuild thread before the pics disappeared.
