Tool Steel Retainers
I was wondering if it would be a noticeable difference on my combo to make it worthwhile over the steel 741 retainer with 930 springs i have been using , The engine is a 472 with SCJ heads with the intake valves backcut , pistons are diamond flat tops , cam is a flat solid 637-648 lift 260-268 at .050 , I dropped a valve last May due to very worn locks , which broke the valve guide and cracked the giude boss , All has been fixed by the end of May i just never put it back together yet till now , I have a set of new 741 retainers that came on my jegs/Kaase small block heads i never used and was wondering if tool steel or titanium is worth the money for a mild combo like mine ? Also i need to get my 930 springs checked seeing how they are the ones i got from Lem in june 2010 for the SCJ heads i got from him with the combo. Are those springs most likely shot by then ? It was only raced one full season and then only a handful of runs since then , It never slowed up at all.

Not much or any bang for the buck there. Check the springs......some of those flat tappet deals last a long time.

Did you back them off when it was stored?

Anything to lighten up the outside weight on the valvetrain doesn’t hurt. But it can get expensive.

Thanks guys , and Stanger even during the off season i would always go and spin the motor over once or twice a week or even start it once in a while so they didn't sit open. My goal was always to see if i could hit high 8's with nitrous with a basic 460 combo just bored with factory stroke , its a 84 fox body 28x10'' slicks C6 trans, 3.90's , flat tappet cam , flat top pistons , box stock heads and intake ,950 carb ,I've been told a dominator would be better but not with my converter, Best motor pass was 9.95 with a 1.37 60' and a converter i couldn't footbrake over 2000 , i used to try 2500 but it would wrinkle the tires and push through sometimes , Always wanted to see what it would've run with a converter made for my combo , Maybe one day , I did try a 180 shot of nitrous and it went 5.96 at 114 mph in the 1/8 with a 1.32 60' and 9.71 at 112 mph in the 1/4 on that run because i ran outta gear , Our track is now going to be 1/8 mile this year except for three races which will be 1/4 , so now i can try nitrous more this year and not worry about running out of gear. The only difference now will be a new valve job which was really needed and now i have a 5200 Nitrous converter from Lenny at UCC to try , He said its going to make quite a difference now from what i was used too , Plus now i can try a dominator and maybe a trans brake for the first time ever , It has it i just never tried it before , only footbrake.

That’s a stout pass na with that combo. I’m guessing it’s pretty light but still high 9s with a basic .060 shortblock and flat tappet is fast.

Its 2760 with me in it , I'm 190 , I wanted to see what it would've done with a custom converter for it and then see what a dominator has over my 950. It was a converter i got off here years ago for $300 just to try the car out and it was so consistent i left it in there , best runs were four 10.05's in a row and the 5th run was 10.049 , Now if i could be consistent lite wise i'd be ok

Re: Tool Steel Retainers
Well checked all the springs and all were like new so i started to put the motor back together a few weeks ago after 11 months which was put the pistons , rods and rings back in then the heads and intake on once the heads were back together. I went racing yesterday finally and it ran great , I'm floored at the difference the new converter made and maybe some on the valve job but it ran faster all motor than it did before on a 150 shot with the old motor converter which i knew wasn't right for it to begin with but it worked and got me up and running , This new one is a nitrous converter Lenny at UCC just freshened up and changed the pilot to a 1.850 so i could use it, It picking up this much on motor with a nitrous converter shows me how far off that other converter was for my combo. My best nitrous pass was a 6.135 at 111.74 mph in the 1/8 with a 1.342 60' on a 150 shot and yesterday my best motor pass was a 6.120 at 112.26mph with a 1.353 60' leaving at 2500 foot braking. Now i cant wait to put the bottle to it now that it has a nitrous converter in it for my combo , Might just be time to try that Mafia intake and dominator now
