Timing sets
Can anyone shed some light on gear drives.
Do they come with the pre '71 8 deg offset or the post '73 16 deg timing offset?
Also, which make is best and noisy or quiet?

Re: Timing sets
Why do you want to run a gear drive? You'd be better served with a timing set such as the FRPP set if you are on a budget, or if not, go with the Danny Bee belt drive. A gear drive would be my last choice.

Re: Timing sets
Definately X2 on ditching the gear drive and using an FRPP set, or a Danny Bee.

Re: Timing sets
I agree with the others, but if you must have a gear drive, forget about the dog-bone style. The Milodon single gear is a good unit. Mike Stevens has been using one for years with zero problems.
Re: Timing sets
I've read somewhere that gear drives (dog bone style) start to grind off some of the metals of the gears over time. I don't have details, so if someone does have the details, please post them.

Re: Timing sets
What is undesirable about a gear drive versus a double roller timing set?
Looks Like The Pope answered that for me.

Re: Timing sets
I'm finishing my parts collecting for my build, and the question I keep getting asked is "I take it you're running gear drive?" hence the reason I asked.
I was also wondering why everyone is so anti them as well

Re: Timing sets
Gear drives have a tendency to transmit harmonics to the valve train, hence a lot more people are using belt drives (Danny Bee).
Re: Timing sets
Apparently Milodon single idler sets are good, but they are bloody expensive ($480!!)
