Longtime member needs help Empty Longtime member needs help

Post  D's557BBF August 5th 2019, 8:13 pm

Long time member needs some help with  my 306 SBF (I know, I know) It has developed a knocking or ticking sound but only when the car warms up to 185/190 degrees. I have eliminated any thought of bad plugs and wires by replacing all that stuff.  I pulled the passenger side valve cover off check rockers everything seems normal with nothing loose. Gonna pull the driver side when the car cools off but if it was a rocker it would do it all the time not when it gets hot...please help, I'm stuck!!!

I'm posting three videos
the first one is right after new spark plugs and wires first start up car cool runs great. The second video is the car at 190 degrees ticking starts and the last video is more ticking at 195 degrees!

Sounds to me like a main bearing clearance issue or a cam bearing issue. Hope I'm wrong.

Randy, wouldn't it (main bearing clearance or cam bearing) make the noise at start up while cold? I don't know, just asking!!

I had a 95 F250 with a 351w that made a slight noise when idling. When cold, you put a load behind it, like backing up, it would
knock like hell. Rod. But if you let the bearings warm, it wouldn't knock. Drove 125k like that.
Try putting a load on it to see if it just needs pumping up? Or you have more issues.

How many miles on this?

Ok here goes, Came from work today and cut the oil filter...Looks brand new inside!!!

Next, I got under the car and rotated the flexplate around only to find this. Looks like the counter weight on the flex plate was hitting the starter plate!

I just bent the starter plate out about 5mm and NO MORE KNOCKS AND TAPPING AT 190°!

Thanks for all the help guys!!

I may be crazy but I would think it should have been making that noise hot or cold if the flexplate was the problem?
