Run what ya got…….
Welll I’ve decided to put together a BBF with the pieces of Junk I still have laying around gathering rust and dust. Going to go into a 86 mustang with a C6 (have) and 8.8 (already in car)
The parts to start that I have.
Set of crusty D3 heads
One .060 D1 block with a fresh bore.
One offset ground 460 crank
One ATI balancer and a Scat C6 flex plate
One solid Flat tappet Cam Research Cam and a set of old Johnson Solids
various sets of pushrods…. And Rockers
Set of 930-16 comp springs and tool steel retainers
One set of SS 2.19 and 1.71 Valves.
One double Roller Timing Set
One Kaase Oil pump and pick up for 9” deep pan plus ARP drive shaft
One MSD distributor
One Edelbrock Performer intake and a Holley HP
One set of CJ valve covers
I ordered a set of Icon flat tops, 6.800 Scat Rods and a Moroso Fox pan last week.
Let’s have some fun and make some Hp Or ET predictions.

Re: Run what ya got…….
I was out wire wheeling the Rusty 4 Link and had a Thought.
Blake Mentioned the other Day Those D2VE Heads He Milled .4"'s into Closed Chamber.
I Never Asked the CC's on Them.
I ASS/UME you are going to be 501-508 Cubes?
With Flat-Tops, One Valve Relief, and.000" Deck or Less You Could Get Some Pretty Serious Compression with Some Tight/Small Chamber Heads.
If You Gut That Fox Down Enough say 28 to 29 Hundren on the Line and Put a Ported Victor and a Dommy on it, With Good Flowing Iron, NO Rules Handicap, I bet Mid to Low 9's Should Not be Very Hard.
^ A Bigger SFT or a Solid Roller would be in Order Though for That.
After What Lane Carney Did at 37000Lbs, Capped Up Tight, I Would Almost Believe "AnyThing" is Possible With These Big Fords, If You Know The Angles

I am Wondering How "Crusty" The D3's Really Are?
But Yea, if It's Not A Ringer The Above Sounds About Right

Try a few lash cycles and see what it responds too. Then do a
round or two with the rockers. It will tell you what
It wants.

Would it be possible for you guys to do a Holley tuning thread?
Sorry Dave. No Problem. Carry on with The Build.
If You Want I guess I Could Edit it Out?
You Never Mentioned How Many Cubes?

Re: Run what ya got…….
You don't scatch the bore you scatch the side of the lifter
and a flat shouldn't really need this

Re: Run what ya got…….
I thought the bore was was scored to direct a piddle directly at the leading edge of the lobe as it comes up to the lifter. Since a flat tappet is constantly rotating if the lifter gets the groove that oil stream would be away from the incoming cam lobe most of the time. I can see the benefit to a flat tappet but not so much for a roller. The Comp tool definitely scores the bore and is specific to flat tappets by the description. Maybe I misunderstood.

With the valve covers off while priming does oil come out of the push (ALL) rods no matter the position of the rocker? If so there is no need to notch or scatch anything
even 427 or early BOSS 429 with no undercut area lifters I have never seen the need

I am to the point where if i have to grind on a set of iron heads or save a bit and buy an aftermarket head, I will go aftermarket 10 times out of 10.

I hear you on the above about prices and time.
Still It Would be Nice to See a Set of Full Tilt D3's Putting in Work.
Maybe You can score a Set Partially Done Up and Keep the Budget Down.
Those New AFR 280's on Fleebay that just Sold for 24 Something would have been Cool Though for New Aluminum, I Think, Over The Eddie's and What They Say Goes Along with Them, Unless You are Talking Bare Heads?

I’m not an AFR fan, don’t like the intake port/intake BS.
Plus I have standard valve location pistons and don’t beep like doing additional machine work.

10/4
I have not seen the guy on Marketplace for awhile but, he always had good deals on new BBF Eddie's. I guess he was buying display or bleem's with a minor scratch or something. As I recall, he beat Summit by a 100 or more per head.
With the price increases of late (SCJ's Went Up) it's hard not to buy SR-71's and be done with it, Even if you have to build the engine around the heads because they are overkill. At Least That's my Thought on the Matter at The Current Time. Still Have to Notch Though

SR-71’s are great heads but they are too big for street strip smaller engines and I don’t have unlimited hood clearance. Bigger isn’t always the best.

Build is entering the budget evaluation point……..
Not going to “modify” the D3’s for larger valves and adjustable valve train. Just can justify the $$ in for the return. But they will get it running for future upgrades.
Just going to spring them and do a valve job and run stock rockers with a hydraulic FT cam “for now”
Taking the block out in a few weeks to hone fit the pistons, line home and deck the block, and get the crank balanced, Bob weight came up to 2258. Like stated heads will get a valve job and surfaced.
Will do a update on this in the future probably to TFS streets or Eddy’s, the solid cam I have and a bigger induction system, it would be cool to see how much bang for the buck you get from th top end.
Tally Ho Fellas…..
