Factory style hoods
I am not familiar with the effectivness of the older ford hoods. I am finially working on my personal car now that the turbo car is finished. It is a 1962 falcon. In the class that I will run I can use a fiberglass hood but it has to be a factory style hood or cowl induction hood. Is the tear drop hood a good design.

It has to be factory for that model. Was that style offered? I am really unsure about what the factory options were.

Re: Factory style hoods
I don't think the tear-drop scoop did anything for air intake, it was for clearance for the 2x4 air box. They had the air coming from the inboard headlights / hoses. Very cool looking set-up
The tear-drop had a screen on the back, I think it was more of an air relief spot to let hot air out.
Sounds like a nice project!!

62 Falcons did'nt have a Factory scoop. The tear drop would be as close as you will find.jmo

Re: Factory style hoods
I was thinking that they didn't have a factory scoop but I need the room and my wife wants me to go with an older look than the cowl hood. I know that the tear drop hood was a factory option on some models to make it legal for racing but I don't know how many were made or anything.
Will it hurt my performance if I use it with an air pan? I was thinking of building an airbox and piping it to the front kind of like the factory setups.

Retro Hood Scoops?
Are 'Ya just try'N to go retro with yer hood scoop
The Boss 429 was on a '69 Mustang and the '68 Mustang had a 428 CJ type.
Why not try the '70's Pro-Stock type 3.5-7" hood scoop

Re: Factory style hoods
The vents in the tear drop were to relieve pressure built up under the hood. Didn't the 63 Sprint have a small t-bird style hood scoop? It would be useless for you application bit it looked cool.

If it's allowed I would do just that. Pipe in cold air from the grill and use the teardrop to exit hot air.

I run a teardrop with an air box.
The tear drop is mainly just to let hot air and pressure out from under the hood. I built an aluminum air box fed from the two center headlites. It was good for 1 1/2 tenths in the 1/4.

I have a guy trying to trade me a 62 Ranchero for my 62 Falcon. What race weight will I be able to get the Ranchero to while still keeping the factory rear frame rails? (Class rules)

Re: Factory style hoods
I'm not sure about the '62 Ranchero. But if it's rear frame rails are anything like my '66 Ranchero it's going to be a pain getting any kind of a decent sized slick under there while keeping the factory frame rails. My '70 Ranchero had a little more room back there, a 10.5(ish) slick was a tight fit. To get a 10.5 W (or a 28 x 11.5) I had take a BFH to the inner tubs (against the frame) & cut out part of the outer tub (against the fender). One site I found said that the 62 Falcon with a 6 cyl ranged from 2262 to 2347 lbs on 109.5" wb. The 62 Ranchero with a 6 cyl was 2348 lbs on a 109.9 wb. The weight numbers might be pretty close cuz it said my '66 weighed 3010/3020.
Removing rear tire size & weight from the picture, choosing between the early Ranchero vs Falcon is a hard choice cuz they both look like they would be cool projects.
As for the hood goes I don't think either car came with any kind of a "factory" scoop/cowl, but I could be wrong. If they will allow you to add a cowl to the factory style hood I guess your choices are to air pan it to either the windshield or the grill (and of course no air pan at all). Too bad the shaker hood scoops weren't offered on the Falcon/Ranchero, that would look damn interesting.

That's what I really wanted to do but the rules guys will not allow it.
I would like to have a car similar to this^^^ but with either the cowl hood, shaker hood, or tear drop.

They did make 2 1964 Falcon light weight cars with 427's and a teardrop hood. One was wrecked and the other I seen for sale about 20 years ago.
