Is having a longer rod better??
All kidding aside, Is/are there advantages or disadvantages to run a 6.7 or 6.8 say in place of a 6.605 rod where counterweight clearance is not an issue?
would you cam differently based on this??
any thoughts...

theres a lot to talk about here, lenght of cly in your block, stroke, how far down piston travels out of bottom of bore, and how often you want to change pistons!

ok, back, was kicked off line,
what stroke do you plan to run? 4.150, if so run a 6.700 or 6.800 you will love it,

Re: Is having a longer rod better??
There are some advantages AND there are also some disadvantages ... the easiest thing to do is just use whatever it takes to connect the piston to the crankshaft, (unless there are other parameters to build around besides rod length), and not worry about how long it is, lol.
Re: Is having a longer rod better??
IMO it's a loaded question, some motors can benifit, on other it may not make any difference.
Alot depends on the intended use, cylinder heads used, displacement, fuel used..... Etc.
And yes cam timing requirements can vary based on rod length for specific purpouses.

Well this is all theoretical, i'm just curious, so lets say... .030 over 460.. stock stroke.. and say for shits and giggles we have both a 2.2 journal crank and a 2.5 journal crank. OEM heads.. say...well ported D0VE's, with a mafia intake 4150 flange, running 13:1 compression, purpose is truck pulling, so will be turning >6500 rpm.

Re: Is having a longer rod better??
Yes the rod length will change optimum cam timing slightly. The longer rod allows slightly more dwell time a tdc and that in theory can help lesser heads work a little better and vise versa for the shorter rods with better heads. But again in pratical pratice you may see no gain at the level you describing.

Re: Is having a longer rod better??
thats what i figured, could potentially see a negligable difference say on a dyno, but the seat of the pants dyno would probably not notice.

Re: Is having a longer rod better??
Dave hit on the #1 for long rods imo--lesser flowing heads with longer rods work better, that includes the total induction system

Re: Is having a longer rod better??
IMO thier much more to be gained in getting the induction, headers and cam timing right than worring about .200 of rod lenght difference.

Re: Is having a longer rod better??
at 6500 you wont see that much of a differ between the 2 rods that you asked about, even less with stock stroke

Re: Is having a longer rod better??
i thought one of the oval racer was going the wrong way--specs 838 hp from 468 cubes and thats with an 850cfm carb. one long ass rod in that engine. he showed who was right

Re: Is having a longer rod better??
Probably used a long rod in order to get the piston weight down ...LOL. (other parameter)
Re: Is having a longer rod better??
piston weight was heavy , could have been made lighter . power numbers -from a dyno , on track performance back it up. other thing this engine wasn't tuned to max.

Re: Is having a longer rod better??
That's 1.8 per cube. Damn serious engine for those numbers- especially for oval track.
