good steel cranks
looking at getting a good crank for my new engine..
just wondering what eveyones throughts are on them?
i ran a scat 9000 in my last engine it worked ok but it hammered the centre bearing.
crank flex from reving it to hard??(my cleavland use to do the same thing with stock cranks)
i was looking at a eagle 4340 but not sure if its up to the job.
i see some cranks have a short snout how much shorter is that than stock?does it still fit the same balancer?
as my engine has a procharger on the front it would suck to get a short snout and have to remake up the brackets again...
who has the best deals on cranks?
looking for somthing about 4.150 stroke....

Re: good steel cranks
I got my 4.150 Scat forging from Adney @ Performance cranks. Nice guy, give him a call he can definately help. He also had the best price I could find.
Someone will post his # as I don't have it.

Re: good steel cranks
the scat is a good crank, for the money it's #1.i have a bryant that is a very nice crank but it was kinda $$.the scat may be every bit as good but it sure aint as pritty.

Re: good steel cranks
i'm looking at stepping up the power, the old nos engine i had,ran the scat 9000 in it,that was making around 800HP + nos.
going to the pro charger i am looking at 1800HP + i throught the scat or eagle 4340 may not be up to the job?bryant cranks seem to be a lot more money but are they worth it?
what about rod lenghts whats the best?most common lenghts seem to be be 6.7 or 6.8 my old nos engine ran 7" alloys got them in a deal so i used what i had....

How much does a broken crank cost? How good is your tune up?
Side by Side, dollar for dollar, there is no comparison in quality to a Bryant. I dont know of any pro category engine running a scat crank unless its billet.
It's a big expense, but it is also piece of mind.

Re: good steel cranks
the kind of power your talken about maken will be best goen with a bryant IMO.crower makes a nice crank too,as well as others in the same price range.that kind of power will also be better made in a good block too.

Re: good steel cranks
The Chinese "Raw Forgings" seem to be decent, its the machine and finish work that makes or breaks the finished Imported product IMO. Plus as far as raw forgings and billet blanks, alot of them are manufactured oversees, come from places like India, England, china, Eastern Europe ect.
Alot of the 3 world metel can tend to be on the lower side of the accepted standards for the perticular alloys. Meaning they are within the spec range but not top of the line. Or even vary in consistancy more than typical domestic stuff or mire upto date countries.

1800 + HP......
Billet crank like Crower or Bryant
Chrysler HEMI rod journal
Upgrade your rear flange to 1/2" bolts or Chrysler HEMI flange
I'm running a chevy snout on my cranks...

It seems you have your sights set a certain way and are looking to get like minded members to tell you what you want to hear. You only want to change ONE thing while adding 1,000 horsepower.
GOOD LUCK...!
By the way ... SCAT makes billets too.
Re: good steel cranks
i was looking at bryant crant but was a little put off by the short snout,as i have already made the procharger to suit a std length crank.
i want to do the job right first time, already have a A460 block and good heads C460 so i am looking for a good strong crank rod combo that will handle the job.
over here it is hard to find the good parts being on the bottom of the world
since i have been on this forum i have learnt there is a lot of stuff for big block fords that i ever throught possible,we just get feed the easy to get bits from the speed shops over here..

Re: good steel cranks
Bryant will put whatever length snout you want on a crank. You tell them what you want, and that's how they build it. For many applications, the shorter snout is desirable. For a Pro Charger deal, a longer length is a better deal. Are you going to do a chain drive on the Pro Charger, or belt?

Re: good steel cranks
It wouldn't hurt to get a big snout crank made if your running big boost, plus if your going to buy a higher end cranks, Like Nevs said they will make you whatever you want.

Re: good steel cranks
I don't know about the other cranks, but if you order one from Bryant you better be ready for a long wait. My friends been waiting on one since last fall

Re: good steel cranks
IMHO, anytime you're running anything more than stock accessories off the crank snout...order your custom crank with a (ugh) BBC snout, length to suit. Custom timing gear sets are available for this and brand X drive flanges are often cheaper.
