1990 fox LX fitting 460 swap "rack & pinion"
im putting a 460 (545) in a 1990 fox mustang LX coupe , what do i have to do to get the engine to fit i dont thing there is enough room for the engine with the brake booster above the steering column , does this along with the rack and pinion need to be taken out and replaced with a manual one?? and is there anything else that needs to be removed?? thanks for the input

I guess it depends on what style valve covers you have. If you have stock style "pent roof" or Edelbrock chrome (pent roof style) the engine will fit with a brake booster-BARELY! If your running tall aftermarket style valve covers, you may be able to fit a smaller diameter brake booster. Even with a smaller diameter brake booster, it's likely that you'll have to notch and reweld the corner of the drivers valve cover for clearance. Or you can get a manual brake conversion kit and ditch the booster all together. Unless you have a very small cam, it's unlikely that you will have enough vacuum for the booster to work properly anyway. I went to manual brakes and am very satisfied with them! It really cleans up the engine compartment and gives more room for spark plug changes and valve cover removal.

With that much duration, I would doubt it would have enough vacuum for power brakes. You might have some power assist the first time you hit the brakes, but after that there would be no assist. I drove my car that way for awhile but then just went with manual brakes for consistent pedal feel. You have to push a little harder on the brake pedal but it gives a nice consistent and well modulated feel. Mine is a street car and I still prefer the manual brakes. And then you can run whatever valve covers you want and not have to worry about the rockers rubbing on the valve covers!
