Look what I found in the pan Empty Look what I found in the pan

Post  bb429power May 22nd 2010, 11:42 am

I have a c6 with matching numbers to my 1971 429. I can tell it has been rebuilt by the writing on it and the cleanness of it. I pulled the pan off today for shits and giggles and it looked brand new. But my cornflakes were soon crapped on, I found this in the pan. Looks like the main belts (I can't remember the proper term, I'm sure that's it). So what do I do now, how do I fix it. The trans was working fine when it was running.

Not sure if you have clutch or band fibers or something else but I would say it's time for a disassembly.

I know I need to repair it. But I'm no transmission expert, I know its on of the smaller bands though because I put a couple pieces together. I don't know what else needs to be replaced (hopefully nothing else) but I've never done tranny work. I know some stuff about it, but I don't want to tear it apart then go "oh s#!t". Here's some pictures. Can anyone tell me what the codes/numbers and what not mean?

There's no way to know what else is damaged until you open it up. The C6 is a good tranny for the first timer. Get a good shop manual and have at it.

I'm just worried about getting into it and not being able to be helped or anything, I know if ONE thing is wrong its not gonna work. That's how transmissions are. I know there has to be more pieces up in there, just a matter of finding them. Good thing I decided to replace the filter even though it had been freshly rebuilt. But what gets me is the fact that it still worked fine, I never got it over 25 since I got it but what did the other guy do? I just hop it didn't screw anything else up and that I can get the part for myself and not have to take it to a shop.

Yep, I already talked to badshoe. These pieces are all cracked and they seem to be rubber. Whats the specific name for it? Do you know?

If it makes you feel any better, i started on my C-6 build up and it actually is very straight forward, Pretty simple for an automatic. No wonder there practically indestructible. Laughing

My next trans is going to be a little more interesting, AOD! Shocked

If it's rubber, it may be the anti grunt bushing on the output shaft which can be removed and left off. If that's what it is.

If it's rubber and it has splines on the inside it's just a rubber sleeve that was on the output shaft during assembly. It has no real use and can be left off.If you can take a more in-focus picture maybe we can identify it better.

Well, I didn't post anything on here the other day because I was REALLY busy. But I figured out that its the center part of the output shaft seal. You guys beat me to the post. So I pulled the rest of the seal out and I'm just going to freshen it up, couldn't hurt. But I'm just wondering where the rest of it is, that's what makes me a little nervous. It wouldn't get sucked up but I don't know if it could jam something and/or restrict flow.

I did my C6 too and it is a pretty straight forward deal. The BadShoe vid is great and shop manuals are available. You will need a VERY clean area to build it in, dirt is the big trans enemy (and weird chunks!!).

Good luck!
