hp estimates on a 472 with stock cj heads
i talked to the builder today and he was using his desktop dyno testing different cams. he said with a roller cam at around 650 lift he got 683 hp and 652 torque at 6000 rpm. and the motor was making over 500 ft lbs of torque at 2000.that is aout 150 or so more than i expected.the heads have been cleaned up in th combustion chambers. no port work yet as i want to wait till next winter to have some done.heads are cast iron cobra jets.valves will be stock size but will be upgraded.
the engine is a 472 with trw forged domed pistons. steel h-beam rpm rods, stock crank. will be left 5 th in the hole . compression should be around 12.5 to 13-1 i have a torker intake and a wieand stealth with 4500 flange.
i havnt bought the carb yet. any recomendations on this one. it is going in a 79 bronco with 39.5 boggers all the way around and 410 gears. dont want to spin it andy higher than 6000. thanks. kyle
have a 750 dommy. too small.

683 is a little on the high side. Should make in the 600-625 hp range with the proper cam and a victor with a 1050.

The cam you have suggested is a little low on the lift.
Karls 466 just did 630 with Doves flowing about 330 and 12:1 and a 1150

Re: hp estimates on a 472 with stock cj heads
with the stock cj heads and only 5 thousandths in the hole, we were a little worried about clearances. do you know of any off the shelf cams that would work well in this or would it be a custom order cam?? i am open to sugestions here also on any changes i might need to make for more performance.
i should also add that the builder is very interested in helpful info also. very easy to ge along with.

Talk with Lem on a cam. On the trw's you may need do do a fly cut with the cj size valves anyway to get proper radial clearance. So it's no big deal to make them A little deeper in the process

All I gotta say is last weekend I turned many many heads when the spectators heard my motor fire up! Too bad electrical issues plagued me to the point where my battery started smoking while i was on the starting line. I shut it down, and couldn't get it to fire back up. Think my starter solinoid was hanging up and got my battery a little hot. Gonna fix it all this week and run it again this coming weekend!!!

i'v ran the same deal you have and did'nt have any valve clearance issues without cutting on the pistons, even more lift. still be sure and check it.good luck

i was looking over your build and according to the flow numbers i have for the cj heads, your heads have a little flow over my cj's. i would be really happy with 550 hp. anything over that is a big bonus, may sell my a-460 heads if this motor makes that much power.

If you sell your a-haeads, let me know, because I'm already in the planning stages for a nice 14:1 or so 521 for next year or so.

thats been about 15yr ago, never saw a dyno back then. i dont know if it was zero deck or not.the block was a d1ve and the cam ,which i still have and am still running,is an ultradyne .722/276-286 @.050.i advanced it one time tryen to get more low end, after i pulled it down the pistons did'nt have any carbon on the intake valve pocket. that's as close as it get's without be'n too close.be very sure you check yours good, cam timing can be a pain sometimes.bronco wrote:were you running zero deck? what kind of hp and tq did you end up with.cool40 wrote:i'v ran the same deal you have and did'nt have any valve clearance issues without cutting on the pistons, even more lift. still be sure and check it.good luck
