Dyno question ??
so what seperates a dyno operator from others ??? ive been reading so much lately to inflated hp/tq #s ....
what makes a better dyno/ dyno operator ..... i mean its not as easy as fired her up and hit the throttle ...
what do we need to look for or what questions do we need to ask before we get our engines fine tuned ....
i would love to hear the input on this ....

Re: Dyno question ??
A dyno operator and a tuner are two distinctly different tasks, one may not be the other.

Re: Dyno question ??
One that can properly operate the dyno and get you the proper data to tune with.
And not abuse your engine or at least minimize any abuse.

Re: Dyno question ??
All around "conscienceness" ... one who has a system and EVERY pull is repeatable. Without good data a dyno is just a glorified "run stand".
Re: Dyno question ??
I've had both and believe me you want a tuner. It would be hard to figure out what questions to ask before hand, because you might get all the right answers. Best to ask if you can drop by and see an engine dynoed.
After my first engine was "tuned" I went by another shop and the guy running the dyno didn't know shit as to how to tune an engine. I was damn near embarrsed for him....glorified engine stand.( not my engine)
The 4th engine I had dynoed at the shop that built it, the "tuner" wasn't there and the guy who asseblied my engine ran the dyno, nice guy and he had probably been around a couple hundred engines on the dyno. Well I found out he was an "operator" not a tuner. After 4 pulls he said " okay your good to go". We hadn't changed jets, timing, two different carb spacers I brought with me etc. I said " no I'm not, now it's time to go to work"

Re: Dyno question ??
The inflated numbers may be related more to dyno calibration than the operator.

Re: Dyno question ??
The fee is to rent a guy's dyno. If/when a guy wanted a tuner he should hire one.
What happens here is....the engine builder would be there to tune it up. When a person contracts an engine build that requires a dyno gig it should be understood that tuning it would be part of the price.

Re: Dyno question ??
I think Randy (and alot of others here) look at a dyno differently than a "hobby or casual enthuiest". Most of the time we already know what we want and are looking to achieve, and an operator that knows how to tune isn't a bad thing but it's not necessary. I want a guy that is experianced in knowing when to quit and is fast to reconize problems and shut down before something bad happens.
But if you haven't done afew before or have never been on a dyno, I'd agree having a operator that isn't a tuner could be very bad.
Plus Lem makes a good point, don't expect the operator to be a tuner and its definetly a good idea to have your builder there to tune and help you out, you probably made a pretty big investment to get to this point.... so don't blow it now.

If you want to impress your friends with your dyno numbers set the intake air temp censor on the intake manifold or the valve cover, you'd be surprised what it does to the calibrated numbers closer the the headers the better.
