Re: 64' Fairlane street car w/ 557
FWIW... my new 572 actually runs COOLER than my old iron head 466!
Could be a number of reasons... Alum heads? diffrnt water pump (also alum), running straight water (distilled w/ watter wetter)...
my iron head 466 with 160 degree thermostat would run 180 degrees most of the time, and creep to 195 under harsh driving (heavy foot)... the 572, with the 160 thermostat is running 165... and ive barely gotten it to 180 under lead foot conditions!... impressive!

I would imagine your Torino would have a larger radiator than a 64 Fairlane, and a larger engine bay.
165 degrees is too cool for me, I like to see my engines run around 180, but if mine will run 190 to 195 when it's 110 degrees out I'm happy.
My experience has been more cubes, more power = more heat.

We just removed a 588" A460 blocked engine [4.560" bore] and installed a 547" production SCJ blocked engine [4.400" bore] in a rear engine dragster...........the SCJ engine runs warmer...same everthing else .TorinoGT wrote:FWIW... my new 572 actually runs COOLER than my old iron head 466!

I suppose the engine bay of my Torino is bigger... but grill area is actually limited on the 70/71 Torino being the grill is so "short" top to bottom...
naturally im using a big block width alum radiator (be cool).. with two electric puller fans.
so you think 165 is too cool for a street driven car? should I consider the 180 degree thermostat? opinions? (sorry if this hijacks)

Re: 64' Fairlane street car w/ 557
As a matter of fact I have. After much reading and thought, I'm going with a 521-528 stroker. Keep the stroke to 4.3" since its a D1VE block. I want durability, reliability and drivability and I honestly beleive you can have all three with some planning and forethought. I am currently getting the car disassembled(50% done so far) so I can send it off to get media blasted. I need to do some more homework to see what all I need from Crites to stuff this thing between the fenderwells, although I am seriously considering a Mustang II unit to slap in there. This will be a fun build for sure...
Oh, and yes, I have been saving all the cash I can!

Lem,
Any idea why the production block runs warmer?
