Damn fire ants......
Loaded up a bunch of junk plywood & remodeling scrap Friday to take to the dump & laid my arm right in a bunch of the little biting bastards while looking under the truck for a place to hook up the tie down straps. Talk about being so pissed you can't see straight. Now I just have to fight the urge of scratching the siht out of the bites.
I guess nothing really works against them 100%. I have tried the "correct" way & used a few different store bought fire ant killers you put on the mound. And I have also tried "bad neighbor" methods & tried pouring both gas & used oil on the mounds. All that really ever seems to happen is they just move the mound to a new spot.
Thought about trying bleach next but have no idea if it will effect them.

We have the little bastards like crazy up here in North Texas and I think fire ants think andro is candy. I use the Bayer stuff with great success now on the years I take care of. As far as treating you the only thing that I could get to work for me was a paste made with water and baking soda.

Mr. Orkin, I know that the water and baking soda crap is supposed to work for wasp stings. I can't remember if it did though, I think it didrichter69 wrote:Call Billy the exterminator............

Re: Damn fire ants......
A pot of boiling water will for sure kill them.. it will kill the grass also (like it ain't already dead in the middle of summer) but you have a very good chance of boiling the queen with this meathod. I also like propane and a match method (not that I have ever tired that before )

I use afterbite on them. You have too keep adding it for the first few hours but I find they don't itch for the next three weeks if I do it. As far as the ants themselves I uses the Scotts fertilizer with fire ant control in the spring and usually by the fall I need to treat again.

Re: Damn fire ants......
In the past when I tried pouring gas on a mound it was more about the chemical side and never thought to light the gas cuz I figured it probably wouldn't burn inside the mound.
Lighting straight acetylene in a mound sounds interesting for a soft/sooty burn. I don't think I would want to shoot both oxygen & acetylene in there (like we used to do at work years ago shooting both in a pipe & lighting it to scare the crap out of the whole warehouse with the big Ka-boom ). A booming mound & the little bastards raining down all over wouldn't be fun.
I did try swapping out ice packs from the freezer on the bites, but it didn't really help much.
