Randy,
Maybe your (9") won't fit in the bucket, but his "member" might be smaller than yours. He did not say what kind of 3rd member he is shipping, is the 8.8 smaller in size, I don't know.

SHIPPING
If a Ford third member will fit into a five gallon bucket, the plastic type will not survive in transit and I'm not sure a metal one will either, considering your shipping truck freight. How much packing can one include with the third member into a five gallon bucket? If the part has value, as in an original SCJ car part, I would crate it up nicely, to endure plenty of punishment during the shipping process.

I shipped a 69 Torino N-Case last year over 1000 miles in a plastic 5 gallon bucket, and it made it there without issue. But then again, I used Fedex also and not those morons at UPS. I just picked it up by the yoke and slid it in. It won't fit square, but it does fit tight. I don't think you'll have any problems.

I always crate stuff up like they are going to drag it by a chain behind the truck. I don't think that a plastic pail would take too much punishment.

You need one of these, or do like Dave said, build a wood crate. Moser shipped mine in one of these with steel banding around it.
9" shipping
Jegs or Summit have storage/shipping containers for the 9". the unit gets held down by 2 screws and the lid screws on as well, and it has built in hand holds to carry it. Works great for shipping intact, only draw back is the price keeps going up, the used to be $27. Now they are like $39.

9" shipping cost
Believe it or not, try the U.S. post office, they have some flat rate shipping thats low cost. I've used them and so far everything has arrived on time and undamaged, they have tracking too.
