TORN.........NEED ADVICE 460 stroker?'s
Hey guys I am new here and fairly new to the 385 motor.I am looking at doing a stroker motor for my truck and not sure what direction I should go! I have a 1979 F250 4x4 with 6" lift 38.5 super swampers 4:10 gears and a 460/C6/NP205. The kits I have been looking at are the 514 and 521 kits. I have a 71 block and a set of D0VE-C heads setting on the garage floor to be used for this build. The truck will be a driver for the most part with the occasional mud race and tug-a-truck tossed into the mix. I am looking for something is the 550-600HP range on "pump" gas.
I have been told that my D0VE-C's are plenty for this motor and I have been told that a set of P-51's are where I need to go.
I have an AIR-GAP INTAKE and a set of MAD DOG big tube headers on the 460 in truck now(which is bone stock)
Any help would be much appreciated!!
Thanks
John

You can get those goals easy with the doves, P 51 would to but I'd don't see the need for them as all your asking for is not hard to get.

Re: TORN.........NEED ADVICE 460 stroker?'s
I'm building my engine for the same purpose. looking at the same power as you posted, D0VE-C heads with a port and chamber cleanup, lunati BM II cam and lifter kit part # 00097 but I got it as a cam and lifter kit from summit. 460 bored .030 over stock 460 crank (that's all you need for that much power, its still better than an eagle crank) stock car rods with the casting ground off for strength. If you want to know anything else let me know, keep in mind with a big truck you want torque. Torque is what's going to move you, I've got a 67 f100 long bed, so I need the torque.

I have a 79 Bronco that I will be lifting and adding 1 ton axles to in the future. Also will be adding a big block...
I plan to follow in the footsteps of this build... THIS is a serious truck motor... if your looking for stump pulling power!

i have a 74 f250 4x4 38's and 4.10's/c6 521 with 10.4.1 with well ported big valve c8's done by scotty with a lunati cam thats 241/249@.050 and stealth intake with custom 950hp and same headers as yours and its around 550hp, lots of fun to drive around town and i do the mud bog races with it drive it there and home. ps better start investing in bigger u-joints and better axles or shafts if u intend to use it to its potential,

You've got 90% of the parts you need to get to that power goal already, a stroker kit is gonna be serious overkill, but some folks like that sort of thing, lol. But in all seriousness start looking at cam kits and shopping for a GOOD machine shop.

this is the posting I have been waiting for..................I was hoping that SOMEONE might have a "stock" 460 putting out the numbers I am looking for MEANING: achieving the desired HP and TORQUE with a non-stroker motor.........or is this a unicorn of sorts
I am not looking for over kill so to speak but IF I'm going to have to spend the bigger bucks on a non-stroker I might as well opt for a bigger inch motor..........the old saying "THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT"
Or am I looking at this wrong.................like I said I'm TORN on which way to go!!!!!!

An "offset" ground crank for a 501" engine using your mildly bowl ported D0VE heads with big valves, a "Stealth" intake manifold, (an Air-Gap will work fine), and a propper "custom" camshaft will get you those "dyno proven" numbers.
I have built SEVERAL like this running around on the street who drive to "mud drags", "hill climbs", "pulling truck events". The MORE compression the better but, you will be limited with a pump gas / street driven vehicle.
EDIT: Maybe some of my customers will chime-in here but, I'm not giving away any names.
Re: TORN.........NEED ADVICE 460 stroker?'s
10.5:1 is about the limit with the d0ve-C heads unless you want to start running more "exotic" fuels. With the right cam, good work on the intake and heads, and a good tune on the carb you should be there. Also don't cheap out on the ignition system, I personally prefer the Mallory unilite dizzy and Hyfire coil.

Re: TORN.........NEED ADVICE 460 stroker?'s
I am looking at staying in the 10:0 to 10:5 comp. ratio JUST so I don't have to run the crazy fuels
I need this to be somewhat streetable......which is where my dilemma rides
Do I punch out the "stock" 460 and run a higher comp ratio piston, with the D0VE-C's,a choppy cam and the other goodies I have already listed...........................
OR
Do I build the stroker with a smaller comp ratio (or keep the 10.5:1)...............you get the idea!!
The cost is not a factor

Re: TORN.........NEED ADVICE 460 stroker?'s
10.5:1 with the d0ve-C heads will require a dished piston, nothing really special but a flat top will get you into the "danger zone" in a hurry. Also installing 2.25" intake and 1.76" exhaust valves is also a must if you are looking at hitting that 550-600 hp mark along with some good porting. Sorry I'm not more help, I'm still learning as well...
