8:71 blower top-get it or not?
I have a buddy that has the impeller portion of an 8-71 supercharger and I was wondering if I should get it from him for either my 400 or maybe 460. The 400 currently has an 8:1cr with a stock rebuild whereas the 460 is just a pile of parts waiting for a serious $$$ injection. Most likely looking at trading a 351 Cleveland block and various parts so he can build a motor for his SN95 mustang in exchange for the blower.
What do you all think?

What is the impeller portion? Is this some old GM blower or an actual aftermarket blower case and rotors with updated bearings etc?

blower
I'm going to figure your talking about the main case , gear plates and rotors. The real test of whether its worth anything or if its junk parts only good for a display is check the rotors for nicks and scratches, and the inside of the case as well. Backfires can damage a blower beyond repair, and any debris in them destroys the case and gears.

Re: 8:71 blower top-get it or not?
The way I read the OP, it's the front end plate with gears, bearings, and rotors,...NO case. If dat bees true, AND the rotors are not too banged up or cracked, those parts might be usable to have an 8-71 blower built up...BY A PRO. Otherwise, they'd make a great pair of lamps or, a neat mail box mounting post.
Re: 8:71 blower top-get it or not?
Talked to Don Hampton a few weeks ago, he says if I sent him the rotors and gears,
it'd save about $300 on a 8/71 build. Just for a rough guideline on the value of 'em.
That'd put the blower at about $1800. Again, they gotta be in good shape though.

Keith, I think that pic is for reference, it's a 6/71 anyway.
These are stock case 8v/71's, if that's what it is, it's gonna be a send-off
and another $1800 for a custom case and rebuild.

Re: 8:71 blower top-get it or not?
The pic is for reference only. I know nothing about superchargers but I'd like to have the option readily available if I wanted to use one. I think the 8-71 would be a pretty good fit for the 400 motor as it won't be used for serious racing, just want loads of torque out of it to get my heavy car moving down the road.
Edit: Any info I can get from you guys is greatly appreciated, I love learning new stuff, especially when it comes to cars!

An 8/71 would work on a 400 but would be plenty. You'd probly want to underdrive it
quite a bit. The cool thing about an 8 is if you wanted to put it on a 460 later on, it's
enough for that too. A 6/71 lacks a bit on the 460, but doesn't need the custom case.
GMC only built the 8/71 in a "V" configuration, like the pic I posted, so to use 'em in our
world requires a custom case looking like the pic you posted. (note the mounting style)
Measure the case length next time you're close to it - 15" = 6/71, 16" = 8/71. Also look at
the mounting style. Or post a pic or two if at all possible.
Here's some charts for guidelines on which one does what- http://www.blowerdriveservice.com/techcharts.php
If you're interested in 'em, this book's a really good one and has a lot of info -
