429 Hemi
Hey guys,
Seems like a crazy question but were the 429 hemi's used in industrial applications? If so would these make for a good street engine? Aside from the heads is there anything I should look for to determine what it is? Anything to be aware of on these engines? This is another case of someone saying "I know a guy who has one of theses 429 hemi's cheap", so I thought I would check it out. What would they be worth?
Thanks,
Scott

Re: 429 Hemi
429 Boss (hemi) were never used as irrigations unless someone put one on, but never heard of any, now Chrysler made a 392 Hemi that was used alot but it was all cast iron and HEAVY...
I have seen a bunch of FORD 427 Low risers used for Irrigation Engines. and some 460 industrials....

Re: 429 Hemi
Scott,
To the best of my knowledge,,,,no they were never used in industrial applications. However, the old style Chrysler 354-392 Hemis were used in industrial applications and marine applications. For example, my uncle had a country sawmill and it had a 392 Chrysler industrial engine powering it. If you find an industrial Chrysler hemi it's probably worth buying at a reasonable price.
Hope this helps,
Charlie

Re: 429 Hemi
The Chysler Hemi was also used to power some Air Raid Sirens during the early years of the Cold War. Don Garlits has one in his car museum.
Re: 429 Hemi
The very early cast iron 429 hemi heads, pre aluminum BOSS heads, were used in marine applications. These were the same heads used by Connie Kalitta in the late 60's.

x2 I'd be willing to bet alot of the program had eyes set on a much broader application base than just NASCAR or a few street performance cars. Thier was alot of research done in the 50's and 60's for the navy as far as alternitve fuels like coal slurry, wierd gasses, ect. I've heard about navy patrol boats using 426 hemis..... On way weird fuels......

Re: 429 Hemi
Are there any performance parts for the 392's?
I'd like to find an old hemi for this old Model A that my dad has.

Re: 429 Hemi
I have heard that they have the steel crank. In fact I have one in the garage that I havent used it came out of a dump truck. I was definitely disappointed it wasnt a hemi. It was too good to be true. Kinda funny but the guy still insisted it was a hemi and high compression. I started to explain that industrial engines are usually low compression and that a hemi would look quite a bit different but he wasnt having any of it. I am slowly learning to just keep my mouth shut and let folks believe what they want.
