Re: Can't decide on a good muffler!
There are lots available from Dyna-Max and Magnaflow. What size pipe and what size do they need to be to fit into the space available...?
Re: Can't decide on a good muffler!
As long as I can clear the frame rails I'm good, prefer something I can mount close to the header and run side dump exhaust so I don't have any pipes our back to take up space around the axle. I have a 3.5 collector on the headers. I was told to look into borla magnaflow and dyna-max. Apparently flowmasters don't flow

As long as they are straight thru it won't make that much difference imo

That's what I've been hearing. Are they good at sound control?

Think they would be to harsh at a steady 2200 rpm's on the street? I'm needing something for the car that will let me run my 429 on the street and pass the road course db limit I think it's 85 or so

you'll have to look at their webside and see what they say or call them, I've never used a decible meter to check them. They do offer different type of mullfers for different sound levels.

Re: Can't decide on a good muffler!
I've narrowed it down to the dyna-max stainless race series or the borla sportsman series

Dynomax has some good mufflers. The ones I had were either the regular ovals, or (I'm pretty sure) the super turbos. They sound great and aren't loud. More on the quiet side but you can hear it and they are meant to be louder when you get up on the revs.
Search whatever muffler's your interested in on youtube, it gives you an idea on what they will sound like.

As far as horsepower goes that is usually true however, the amount of noise will be different from muffler to muffler body size and shape.
No one still has any idea what actual size body will fit into that situation. Only if one can see the space and measure it will we know ... lol.
Re: Can't decide on a good muffler!
I'll let you guys know later tonight, gotta climb back under and mock up my clutch system. My local muffler shop owner told me he just installed a set of borla header collector mufflers that were shockingly tame

Re: Can't decide on a good muffler!
I went from 3 chamber delta flo Flowmasters to Magnaflow 18" ovals and it quieted the car down quite a bit at idle and low speeds. They sound good at idle and really roar at full throttle, might even be louder than the Flowmasters. I went with the 18" trying to quiet it down as much as I could, it wasn't easy squeezing the length under a fox body but the muffler was narrower than my old mufflers and this helped to make them fit. According to Randy Malik they tested various mufflers on the dyno for use in the EMC and found the Magnaflows and Dynomax ultra flows were the least horsepower loss. I looked at the Borlas but couldn't find anything in the right size. Some of their mufflers are 3" in and out but the core is only 2 1/2"!Maddmattmustangs wrote:dfree383 wrote:Magnaflows work well.

Those mufflers sound decent but, they sure do rob the horsepower no matter what THEY say.

Well I want to loose as little power as possible
Anyway, I have about 18 inches with an offset muffler to play with going width wise and over 20 inches on the length. The height is kinda cramped at about 6 inches

If you gotta have an offset muffler then you're stuck with a 3" pipe.
The shortest oval offset muffler, (straight through), with 3 1/2" pipe is from Magnaflow has a 22" body.
Re: Can't decide on a good muffler!
I was wanting to put bullets on my truck, they sound nice.

A 3 1/2" inch pipe, (straight through), oval 4 1/2" x 9" muffler with 14" body and Center pipe locations is available from Dyno-Max as #17517 or Magnaflow has a Stainless oval 5" x 8", (straight through), and center pipe locations with a 14" body #14151.
There are LOTS available from both companies in a 3" pipe.

Could I run a reducer to bring it down to 3? Would that hurt power alot?
