Could a cowl hood be hurting me?
I have a 85 mustang with a 460 vic intake and 1050 dommy on it. I have a 5in cowl hood that sits close the the windshield. This past weekend at ford vs buick the car would get hot if I hot lapped it. By hot I mean 220-230. When we pull the hood of the temp would go to 190 in about 1.5-2 minutes with the waterpump and fans on. This is the second time the car has been to the track. If you dont hot lap it it runs about 190. I have 1.5 to 2 inches from the air horn to the hood. We are thinking about putting a stock hood on it with the harwood bolt on aero scoop that we already have. Could this hood make the carb suck in hot air all the time? Would the motor benifit from the hood scoop and cooler air? The car traps 120-121. Thanks

the cowl hoods that go to the windshield will limit airflow in and out of the engine compartment. I don't recommend them at all for carb apps ever. They are designed for clearance only, not for airflow. You would be better off with a regular cowl hood or the scoop setup you mentioned.

The hood you have on it now will be TONS better for you vs a stock hood (more volume for air). Hot lapping the temp will get up there. Not really a whole lot your gonna be able to do about that. WHen I won the Zmax pinks all out this year, after my 2nd round in the finals, my car got up to around 230 degrees and creeping higher. Thank god he jumped second round because when I came back it was near 240. When I dont hot lap it, it will stay around 190

I've got a 79 Mustang with a 472 on alky with a carb. I've ran a pro stock type scoop and a 8" to the windshield cowl. There was NO difference in ET with either hood.....I was shocked when going to the cowl hood. Everyone said it would slow it down , but it never changed anywhere .ET,MPH nothing, just more visibility with the big cowl. Maybe it's so big that it has enough air under it to function right? I'am not doughting what Dan say's at all, because i've had other people tell me the same. But,my BB Maverick had a 6" Cowl on it and it picked up a full tenth when I ran 2- 4"tubes to the grill area from a homemade air box. And like was said, when you HotLap it's gonna get very warm,no matter what if you are not on Alcohol.

So if I put the stock hood with the hood scoop on it, it should be better. All I can imagine is that the carb is sucking nothing but hot air cause its 1.5in away from the hood.

of the two options listed, I would say the scoop would be your best bet.

Re: Could a cowl hood be hurting me?
A few years ago a friend had a Mustang with a Small BLock in it with a 6'' cowl that ran back to the windshield (possibly Cervini's?) Car ran 8.90's-9.0's with n20. The car was in the pits running, and they lifted off the hood to check something, and the engine picked up almost 200 RPMs. After taking the hood off a few times to prove this was what was going on, they decided to trim a couple inches off the back of the cowl to allow easier airflow to the carb. I don't think the car picked up any E.T., but that was strange to say the least. Carb was 3-4'' from the top of the cowl. Any airpan or the design of the airpan may make the difference in this comparison.

We tried that. And the car didnt get hot. On the return road I held my hand out the window and you could feel the heat coming out.
