FMS Harmonic Balancer
I have a FMS harmonic balancer. I was looking at it this evening and saw a noticable lip on the ID of the balancer. It's ~3/8" from the edge of the balancer. The balancer will slip onto the crankshaft far enough to reach that lip and abruptly stop.
Is that lip the 'press fit' of the balancer or is it a manufacturing defect? I don't want to force it on the crank and risk damage to my new crank.
Any help is appreciated...
Have a good day!

All dampners need a press fit ....otherwise the dampner can't do it's job.
Anti seize on the snout is a good idea and puting the dampner in hot water before install will make things go easier.

Re: FMS Harmonic Balancer
sometimes dampers may require a honing for proper fit, depending on crankshaft snout dimension variations.

Okay, that leads to another question:
Is there a way to check this fit in my garage? I bought the crank and balancer so I could fab my front mount accessories. I'm trying to do all the fab work before I take the engine to the machine shop to have everything taken care of in one trip...
Have a good day!

I have a 2" mic. By "snap" guage, I'm guessing you mean a plug gauge, right? Can you tell me what size plug gauge I need?
Should the ID of the balancer be 0.0005" smaller than the OD of the crank snout??? Or, 0.00xx????
I'm sure I'm asking a simple question for people who do this stuff day-in and day-out, but I'm not a machinist and I don't do this stuff all the time. Nevertheless, I'd like to learn the correct way to do this. If the right tool(s) can be found at a 'reasonable' price, I don't mind buying it/them.
Have a good day!

1] run a ball hone in the i.d. to get any over spray out of the i.d.
2] Do what I said several days ago ...heat the dampner....anti seize on the snout and put the damn thing on.

lol, it's not that big of a deal. I just got my drive mandrel, pulleys, and harmonic balancer bolt today.
I heated the balancer to 175*F and couldn't get the balancer on by tightening the balancer bolt. I can get it about half way on before it stops going on. I measured the crank hub @ 1.3760".
Looking at the following thread,
http://www.460ford.com/forum/showthread.php?t=147694&highlight=crankshaft+snout+diameter
the snout diameter is on the large side. Unless somebody suggests a home remedy, I'll find a local machine shop to enlarge the balancer ID slightly.
Is this a measurement that shops check before shipping them out?
Have a good day!

I put mine in the vise and used a sandpaper flapper wheel on it until I got it where I wanted it.

Re: FMS Harmonic Balancer
Unless it's grossly under sized like the ATI stuff the issue generally is the snout dia bigger than a production unit....like you have seen.
The 2nd ...maybe bigger issue is....do not use the crank bolt to pull the dampner on.....it's way hard on the snout threads and a proper installer has much more 'steam' to push the dampner on.
Like Rick said....a flapper wheel will cure any ills in short order.
DO NOT use the crank bolt to pull the dampner on.

Uh, oh...guilty as charged . I bought a harmonic balancer installer kit and got the balancer on during lunch. I still think it's a little too snug, but I'll let the machine shop check it out when they do everything else.
Thanks for everybody's input!

If it went on then it's probably not too snug. You don't want it too loose or else it'll fret and possibly weld itself to the snout.

or loosen up and wobble the crankshaft and break the bolt then fly off during use........not good makes a hell of a mess.....

Sounds like you're speaking from experience, I wouldn't begrudge that to happen to anyone or to have to do the cleanup afterward, lol.

yep but on my deal the outer ring let go... makes a hell of a lot of racket under the hood till you get it shut down....watched a buddy and his Mopar loose one complete balancer. oh Crap did it mess thing up....
