NEED HELP! Headers glowing red
Ive put together a 460 83 model short block with 69 model heads and a small comp cam 268 with the 83 cast iron intake. when breaking the cam in at an above idle the back 2 header tubes on each side turn red hot. So Ive tried a different carb, turned it around backwards, different spacers, pluged off all vacumn ports and tryed the timing at several different spots. Nothing I have done has made any differences. So it seems like it might be the intake. I put an EDL Performer on and if any thing its worse. Turn the throttle up to about 2000 and in 30 seconds their red. Any Ideas will be greatly appreaciated. Thanks Leon

Re: NEED HELP! Headers glowing red
Ive worked with 2 diff carbs a650 holley and BG 750 set the timing with a light 3 to 4 diff places, pluged offthe vac lines and it doesnt effect it at all. I have looked at the pluges and it doesnt seem to be to rich. The engine idles and runs great. It acts like it would if you would leave a large vac line off. Thanks Leon

Re: NEED HELP! Headers glowing red
I checked the gaskets where it was visable, looks ok if it was leaking underneath in the lifter area I think it would pull oil and smoke. The dist is factory and I have verified the timing marks but Im going to check all this stuff again. Thanks Leon

Re: NEED HELP! Headers glowing red
? wouldn't it be real lean on them 4 to make the headers glow with to much gas it wouldn't it be washing the cyclinders and making them run cooler.I would pull the intake and inspect it good for hair line cracks where it could pull to much vacuum or air in leaning them out to much.

Re: NEED HELP! Headers glowing red
Guys,
For those of you who don't know Leon,,,,he is one smart cookie. He is 1/2 of the brain trust and the driver/tuner of the Fox body Mustang that won the OSCA Championship again this year at "The Valley",,,defeating fellow board member Joe Mayabb.
Leon called me about this problem and it has both of us stumped. I keep thinking it has to be really lean but he still hasn't found the answer. I have had glowing headers before with the start up of a brand new engine,,,,but all 8 of them glowed and it was super lean on the idle circuit. The fact that it is the back cylinders and not the front cylinders is what is confusing.
Any serious help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Uncle Charlie

Thanks Charlie, but I dont feel like a very smart cookie right now, this thing is kicking my butt all over the place, kinda like the race car last year and part of this year. Nice to hear from you Charlie.
I set the timing at 8 about 15 to 20 at fast idle, any lower than that it doesnt like to run. At about 35 fully adv it doesnt seem to heat up quit as quick or as bad, started cranking hard so Im leting the bat charge and IM going to turn it up more. Thanks

Re: NEED HELP! Headers glowing red
I had something just about like this happen once. The motor would start and seem to run fine but the headers would start glowing after just a little bit of idleing. The little roll pin that locates the pick-up in the distributor had partially sheared enough that it was out of phase I guess. Fixed it and it ran fine.

Re: NEED HELP! Headers glowing red
Well I turned it up till it was in the 40 range and it does seem to help, I had to turn the lights and it took a little longer. But then it wouldnt start, so I think the timing marks are all right. I think I might put a msd 6 on it the brain has melted out some of that black stuff from underneath from the heat over the summer. Sometimes it seems like it has a miss, it comes and goes. Thanks Leon
And for what Charlie said about our racing success, I do have Tons of help like the car owner and best friend Kevin Rowe. His brain is always working, Steve Matukus , Mutukus motorsports racecars helped us get the new chassie lined out. Steve Johnson at Induction Solutions for the new noozle systems and theres more.

Re: NEED HELP! Headers glowing red
Make sure you have a Stud in the Carb's center hole for the air cleaner. Had one Dominator that was a straight shot thur and had me stumped for a while.

Re: NEED HELP! Headers glowing red
Yes cam is degreed, but that crossed my mind, but how bad would it have to be out to do something like this. The engine idles and runs good. Might be worth double checking. As far as the timing marks, I went both ways, till it wouldnt hardly run and till it wouldnt start so Ive about give up on the timing. Thanks Leon

Re: NEED HELP! Headers glowing red
I was going to say the cylinders might be starving from fuel due to the design of the intake. But I guess not...

Re: NEED HELP! Headers glowing red
2 different intakes 1 cast and 1 aluminum and I looked the aluminum one over pretty well, the heads do have a valve job. Charlie and I talked about the possibilty of the rubber seal between the intake and the block holding the intake up enough to make the gaskets leak because of the 69 model heads on a 83 block, but it idles very well runs good and doesnt smoke at all. This is odd. Thanks Leon.

Re: NEED HELP! Headers glowing red
I've replaced the ing with an msd box different dist and wires and still have the miss. I have a lifter making noise now so looks like I'll have to replace itand I'll take out those rubber seals between the intake and block, hopefully that will help. This thing isnt being very nice to me. Leon
