Checking out UNOH tomorrow...
So I will be going to Ohio to check out the college I will probably take machining classes at tomorrow. I know Dave F has been in their shop and he said it was impressive. do any of you want me to take pictures of this badazz shop while I'm there? And what questions should I ask while I'm there other than the obvious? I just want to make sure that when we finally get there I ask the right questions. Their facility is kick butt, rock crawling course, 1/8 mile launch pad, drifting course, they own Limaland!
But I'm not being taken in by all the snazz and smoke + mirrors. they have a night club and a bar I was joking with the guy when he came in to school about that. Everyone was laughing with all the things I was joking about.

HOT DAMN THAT SCHOOL IS BADAZZ!!! AiNt rEtYPIng tHat $#!T They have 3 or 4 engine dyno's and 2 chassis dyno's, we watched a couple dyno pulls. the engine they were pulling with was a 385, I'm sure the cid was more than 460 though. You know how at a place it is usually all chebbies plus like 1 or 2 fords and a mopar? This place was ALL Ford plus ONE mopar which was in the transmission class. I AM going here, as for the pic's, I got some. But I didn't get any of the actual machine shop, they have a video though and I'll get a link to that for you. When I am living there I want anyone who is willing to make the trip come and visit me, then I'll show you how wicked this place is.
I always hoped, that SOMEWHERE on Earth, there was a place. A place where motorheads can live in peace, and have all the supplies needed to build the best cars on the planet. Guys, I found that place, I want to go back and never leave.
As for a career, I thought about teaching engine building and machining or something like that at the college. For a teacher pay isn't good, but for a college teacher I think it is. In a sense I could still do what I love, and get a major kick out of teaching kids how to do this stuff. Pictures will be posted soon.

Re: Checking out UNOH tomorrow...
I don't mean to burst your bubble, but I would like to give a little insight on your decision...
I attended UNOH for High Performance Auto Technology a few years back. I graduated with a great grade point average and was on the Dean's List the entire time I was there. The school is very hands on, has some great instructors, and you will learn a ton IF you apply yourself.
That being said, it's not all sunshine and roses. The town of Lima sucks. There is absolutely nothing to do there, most everyone I went to school with went home every weekend. Decent jobs are few and far between. Another big issue is the accreditation of the school. Although getting an associates degree is an option, the degree is worthless if you intend to do any further schooling. Being a "tech" school the core type classes are not of a real collegiate caliber and none of the credits you acquire will transfer.
The biggest issue I see is career options. I don't get on here much anymore, but I have read some of your posts and you seem like a pretty bright kid. Unless you want to spend the rest of your life turning wrenches on cars or working in a machine shop there are very few opportunities with this education. There is nothing at all wrong with either of those professions, but understand the lack of income potential and overall career flexibility and opportunity.
I would suggest looking into the engineering fields. I read one of your posts saying you like design but didn't want to be stuck in a cubicle everyday. There are many different positions in engineering that allow you to be in a test lab or out in the field. A degree in engineering opens you up to a wide variety of jobs, and those opportunities come with a much higher income potential.
I don't want to rain on your parade, just trying to help someone think things through a little further like I wish someone would have done for me when I was in your position. I too thought "I don't want to be stuck in front of a computer all day", and didn't go to college for Mechanical Engineering right out of high school like I had planned. I had no real concept of the field. I am now ten years out of high school, have an associates from UNOH and am two years into my BS in Mechanical Engineering. Being that you are in MI look into a school like Kettering that works as a co-op program. It's tough, but you get great hands on experience, are not always stuck in a classroom, and the doors an education from that caliber of school will open for you are amazing.
I think Dave Freelander said it quite well in one of your other threads :
"I've looked onto engine building as a job / business, It's too competitive and has very heavy overhead it do full time nowdays. I have alot of friends and family members with various auto related businesses and it isn't a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
My advice would be, do it if you truly enjoy it, but you will make a much better living and have a easier go of it in other fields. In other words go to a real university and get an engineering degree and keep the actual mechanic / auto field as a hobby, Your future will be much broader."

I am not going to disagree with anyone but I will say do what you want and enjoy. If everyone was engineers then there would be nobody to machine our engine parts. Not everyone can be rich and a business owner or there would be no employees. You are young enough that you can always go to school for something else if you don't like it.

Re: Checking out UNOH tomorrow...
Thank you Seth, I will look into it more. I know every place will have their defaults regardless of how nice it is. For example, the dorms, the regular ones suck. I have always wanted to get an engineering degree while I still can, I've come up with good ideas but the best ones have now been produced and probably patented I have a great imagination so I come up with some sweet ideas and a lot would work if produced. I will look into the school you mentioned also.
