Username change

Is it possible to change your username without having to cancel your current account? For what I know that most forums require the canelation of the account and than start a new one with a different e-mail but would like to avoid all that.
I was thinking about changing my username but since I use the same username on other forums I don't know if I could change it on those.
I would like to keep it that way if it is possible.
I would rather not change my username here if I can't change it with the others.
