Tearin' It Down
Well, I got the intake and heads off looking for the "missing" coolant.
I can see where it has been coming out along the head gaskets, but I also found this:
It looks as though my POS leaking thermostat housing was causing this one here. The coolant was running down the manifold bolt into the valve spring area. In the red circle is a small pool of coolant.
BTW, head studs are a PITA with the engine in the car

Did you find any bad lifters or loose rockers.Glad you found your water leak I use alittle rtv around the water port and on the bolts at them mine tried to leak like that when I first put my intake on.

I just got it tore down and it was way past dark. (gets dark here about 4:30 now )
I hope to check out the lifters tomorrow. I pulled a couple and they look great. All the lobes I could see looked good too.
I never thought about putting RTV on the bolts just around the port.

Another thing I noticed is the combustion chambers and pistons are very black. Guess I'm gonna have to work it a bit harder!! (and tune the carb better!!)

It's a good thing you didn't find a couple clean piston. 8 black ones are better.
Although that would have pointed to where the water was going .

That's a good point Mike!!
Not sure what I should do with the heads sitting in the shop for the winter.......hmmmm
