5 points,
11:1 is doable with a good tune-up and a good cooling system. You can also pull a little bit of timing out of it if need be.

10:1 if your average or below average tuner or do not have access to consistant fuel, it will be very reliable and trouble free.
11:1-12:1 if you are an exceptional tuner and have consistant fuel, know how to set it up and drive it.
Alot will bepend on you CID and cam selection to.
Take a look at some of the dynamic compression calculators prior to purchasing a cam.

When it comes to compression ratio on an engine that's destined to run on cheap gas under real world conditions I tend to always lean toward the conservative side. It's MUCH better to have a lower than optimum compression ratio engine that's tuned correctly than one that has a higher than optimum ratio crutched to work.

If you are at high altitude like me (a mile high) you can get away with running more compression also.

If this build is like any that i do for people they never stick to pump gas for long, and after a bit want more power. dont sell the engine short . Go with 11 to 1 and pull a little timing out for cruising

reason if this helps.........cars a race car basicly no heat ..no ac ..no radio ect ......... full cage .....hopping mid 9s .......was planning on something aiming for high 8s ........not looking for a long distance cruiser .....ust something to go to the cruise nights in town once in a while ....prob 10 miles at a time total ...at heart i want a race car but want to go with my old man hes got a 66 chevelle ss396 car ...
thanks and looking the 560-580 ci ball park maybe 572 ..............idk yet rods are 6.850 olivers and have 4.5 stroke crank just need pistons .......the fms a460 heads are heavly ported also ...by kaase from a while back

Re: question on compression ...using pump gas (a460...using fms a460 heads)
if its only for 10 mile runs and alot of track time.... why not just put the squeeze to it and run some race gas?

get the compression up and run race gas if your only going to use it once in awhile and for short trips.

Re: question on compression ...using pump gas (a460...using fms a460 heads)
if i did 11.1 compression with my a460 fms heads that are ported with an sv1 .......around 560-580 ci ............what kind of power should this thing make ballpark
...i know it will make steam if it was 14.1 i see those combos ............want a pump gas car thats is capable of mid 9s or low 9s .............cars a gutted 90lx notchback ......full cm cage mioni tubbed ect ...........should weight 2800lbs with bb
theres obviosly a lot of variables cam , intake ect ..........lets just say i had the right matched parts with this compression and my heads

Re: question on compression ...using pump gas (a460...using fms a460 heads)
I ran a 557 in my old jetboat with ported A460's and a TF TR with 1050's, a .713 lift cam and 10.2:1 cr, it turned a A cut impeller 6200 and on the impeller/hp chart that showd to be about 800-825hp. Motor could be driven all day long on any pumpgas and pulled like a freight train! This was also in the Texas summer, 100+ degrees and 80+ hummidity.

Re: question on compression ...using pump gas (a460...using fms a460 heads)
should i have prob runnin mid 9s with a combo like this ......cam prob can be real aggressive due to very little street driving just backroads when used
just gonna run 11.1 using pump fuel ..............

Re: question on compression ...using pump gas (a460...using fms a460 heads)
I am running 10.9:1 on 93 octane, I would say listen to Charlie. Give Lem Evans a call and get a gameplan together for pistons and cam, run compression close to 11:1 then you can have your cake and eat it too. So far I have gone 10.64@126 with my truck and that was spinning and also got a good 800 pounds on your car. I am running TFS street heads so I would think mid 9's with what you have.
