Roller Spring Perches for a Mustang?
Are roller spring perches that much better than new/stock perches? I am curious if it is worth $300 on my drag only 3300 lbs stock suspension 67 mustang that runs 9.90's. It launches the front wheels a couple feet off the ground and seems to drive fine with the stock perches.
Thanks for the help

Roller spring perches for leaf spring cars are only required on ladder bar cars where the front mount of the ladder bar is not the same as the front mount of the leaf spring. In fact using them on a car that does not have something to stop the rearend from rotating would be rather disasterous.

I think he is talking about the perches for the front suspension of his car, I had some back i the day and it really freed up the front end..................saw no gain what so ever. IMO if the car is working awesome now I would save the money.

Greg made his, I'm not saying they are a waste of time or money, I just dont think you'll see a 300 dollar difference considering the car works good as it is lol.

I guess if the old ones where really badly seized and the new ones allowed the front end to rise easier you could see better weight transfer. Like Jon said tho. If it aint broke dont fix it. Maybe more, quicker weight transfer would upset the apple cart and cause some other problem that would slow the car down. Every car is different they say.

That is a good point.richter69 wrote:......IMO if the car is working awesome now I would save the money.
There are times where you see a guy with an already "working" car decide to make a ladder bar/4-link change wanting to make the car launch harder/more violent (for whatever reason)......only to end up calming it back down at the track with a tighter shock setting. Or the guy that frees up the front suspension on a car that already works good only to find out he now needs limiters on the front to calm it back down.
It all depends on the total combo.

I did make my spring perches. Very easy to do and inexpensive. It also made a very big difference in the free movement of the front suspension.
I can't see where the extreme friction of the stock spring perch would ever be a good thing.

My stockers were so bound up when I put them in a vise I had to hit 'em with a hammer to get them to move. Rollers really helped me. If your stockers are in good shape your gain may be minumal.

Greg, post some details on conversion... And can you do it to old ones that are bad?

They are around $180, not $300
One thing that was not mentioned was that the roller spring perch will always have the same resistance, where as a stock set will eventually loosen up, or worse yet bind, possibly creating frontend lift inconsistencys. On a drag only car I would think stock style would last a long time though. I run them and it did free up the frontend. There is more to be gained by using bearings in the control arms, especially the lower control arm with the rubber bushing. Also the original strut rod bushings bind up the frontend, and bearing type replacements free it up some.

Here's where I got the basic idea. I kinda copied this design and it turned out great.
