Re: Merlin v12 chebbie
The P51's used an Allison aircraft engine and was only about 2/3 of the Merlin for ci. Not real sure, but the Merlin was about 2400ci vs. Allison at about 1500ci or so. Both engines were very state of the art and still are in some ways. There is a guy that has a Merlin in a Modified pulling tractor and I've been up close to it and it is a very unique piece of equipment. Never looked at an Allison up close, but have researched them a bit, quite a piece of engineering for the time period.

Any clue on the bore/strokes on them? just curious since they have such a high displacement, don't they have huge stroke?

The Merlin was the small one with a 5.4" bore and 6" stroke. The Griffon was the big guy with a 6" bore and 6.6" stroke.

pretty sure all but the very early P51's had merlins.
Allison's seem to be more popular with the pulling crowd. at least on our continent.
One has to be mindful if buying an allison, i'm sure Merlin's and Griffons are the same, they come in clockwise and counter clockwise rotation.
