Ford 9" set-up Empty Ford 9" set-up

Post  460bronco February 10th 2011, 7:36 pm

I'm about to put my first set of gears in a ford 9" and had a quick question.

When moving my ring gear left and right with the adjuster nuts during set-up, how tight do the main cap bolts need to be? Are they just snug or do they need to be almost fully torqued down? Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jon

Not sure how everyone else does it, i just leave 'em snug. Enough to hold everything together, and be sure that nothing is cross threaded. Made a spanner wrench outta a stick of 1/4 x 1 flat iron, and a coupla 1/4-20 bolts. Final torque after everything is set. Seems to work for me.

I just snug it down (10-15 ft lbs) you get it too tight maybe it will bind up the adjusters. I try to adj mine until the bearing caps spread out .010 so there is preload on the bearings. X2 on the flat iron adj tool got to have that

The stock cases just snug them as stated, the aftermarket units with the billet caps the adjusters will turn with the caps at full torque
