ring gear replacement
I have a PRW flywheel on the motor , ring gear is toasted. figured out it is a 180 tooth flywheel,
quicktime says the flywheel size for motor and trans should be 184t. I assume this is the reason I am killing starter gears and the ring gear.
ok so now for the questions:
can i replace the ring gear (billet steel flywheel)
If i can repalce the ring gear, can i replace it with a higher tooth count. (180 to 184t)
thanks

Re: ring gear replacement
Frank, I think all the big block internally balanced engines takes a 184 tooth flex plate, you need to talk to one of the hero type guys, all I've had are 184.
Ignore this Frank, I just seen on the for sale section you are running a stick shift., SORRY

Re: ring gear replacement
must likely thats offshore fly wheel . nothing to lose , take off the ring gear and get a 184 and see if it fits

Re: ring gear replacement
ok so i found some specs on the ring gears:
184t outside diameter 15.503"
inside diameter 14.210"
180t outside diameter 15.512"
inside diameter 14.518"
am i missing something, shouldnt the 180 be smaller than the 184 ring gear? what am I missing here....

Re: ring gear replacement
The OD is only .009 bigger - .0045 on a side.. meaningless really. Being that the OD is a negligible difference, that means the 180T is slightly coarser to get the same diameter. If they were the same pitch, you're right - the diameter would be smaller. As far as the ID, that's just the finish size to fit the flywheel register. Not sure why there would be a difference there.
Hope this helps!

Re: ring gear replacement
the pitch of the gear is the same between the two. I was hoping to pop a 184 ring gear on the 180 flywheel i have, but it looks like i am buying a new 184t flywheel.....
Re: ring gear replacement
If the pitch is truely the same, and the OD is the same, the pitch diameter is smaller, making the teeth deeper, and chewing up your starter. That's odd, as it would make the tips of the tooth form 'thinner'..
At any rate, the register for the ring gear you need is smaller, so unless you made a spacer ring, it ain't gonna happen
