With a rough 80 grit stone in the a good ridged hone it can be done and years ago it was done all the time.
With that grit it is honed DRY within .003" of finished bore size then changed over to lubricated finer grit stones. I wanted to forget about those days 45 years ago after school at the rebuilder I worked for, lol.
Rough honing to .020" oversize of a 4 cylinder engine took about an hour per hole and I felt like I almost broke my arm several times when the I stroked the hone to deep into the main web. When finished, it DID measure straight and round.
CRAFTSMANSHIP seems to be a forgotten art these days; especially to those who have no idea what used to be involved.
