Hello there and thanks in advance.
My main question is what clutch and flywheel I need to use, and if i should go hydro or mech linkage. If my homework is correct the '77 motor is internally balanced, and the ZF only came on the later ('87-'95) externally balanced 460's. Also any tips or suggestions that may help my swap go smooth would be greatly appreciated. This truck will be hauling a trailer almost daily. The 460 has 45k origional miles on it, all stock at this point. Some help with a Boneyard list, and a parts store list would be great. Thanks again.

If you are getting a 5speed out of the salvage yard be sure to get flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and all linkages and everything associated with it, that way there is no guess work. Take the later flywheel to machine shop and have it neutral balanced.

Like said above you should be able to have the factory external flywheel machined to make it neutral.

I think all of the ZF 5 speeds came with a bellhousing cast into them. You will need to put in a hydraulic clutch for this application. As far as the engine, while you have it out, put in an early style timing set, for some cheap power gain. Cool

'77 LTD 460 + ZF 5-speed in a '76 F-350 2WD Empty A possible Option?

Post  scrublie April 15th 2011, 3:04 pm

I read that I could use the external balanced flywheel as is on my internal balanced engine if I put the external balance in the front behind the dampener? Could it be that easy? lol

Thanks

No you can not the hachit will trow your crank out of balance leading to big trouble. You need to do as the others have said have the late model flywheel machined.
