how or what got you into BBF'S
what got me into them?
well i was a dodge guy have a 318 with a set of headers and i thought i was the shit lol
well i was watching urban cowboy and the black ford truck i thougth was awsome
so i figured i would keep my yey open for a older ford truck
well a few buddys of mine truck pull and i would go to some and thought it looked like alot of fun
and insted of getting tickets burning tires on the road i could start truckpulling
well i found a fairly solid 72 ford f250 highboy with a 360 4speed 4x4
well i paid way to much for it but i had to have it
so drove it home and put a set of pipes on it
and drove it for about a yr
well i wathed to redo it so it the garge it went and i bought a 79 f250 4x4 to drive while i was building my 72
well i was wondering what should i run for a motor well i thought 460 well ya cant get any bigger
so i bought a junk 460 and tore it down and a set of used fully ported d3's and a set of sir rod's and flat op speed pros
fully solid roller
fender well headers and a set of 33's and a black paint job and i had the world by the rear
well in till i hooked to the skid and broke about every thing but the motor lol
so that is were it started i guess i need a hobby to keep me out of trouble
and i have been addicted ever since
i built a few combos like that one for about 3 yrs
and pulled it in a streel legel class
well the past 2 yrs i steeped it up to a svo block tfs Aheads 530 combo
built a few differnt trucks but i now have a mod truck 86 body and a custom 76 frame
so i guess i would be a 1st gen BBF guy in the famly
but i have 3 kids 4-2 and a 9month old they love the garge and the just smile from ear to ear what i fire up the truck
my 4 yr old boy plays truck pulling all day and makes a mean motor sound and my 2 yr old girl does the same
life is good
o yea i didnt even know how to put a set of lifters in untill i found you guys about 4 yrs ago
but i do all my own work and wreck all my own stuff lol

Re: how or what got you into BBF'S
About 20 years or more ago, a bunch of us would hunt coyotes, and the trucks that were cheap and lasted were the 70's Fords. You could buy them all day long for about $2K. I have owned about every imaginable combo that Ford made in those years, from 1/2 ton to full ton trucks, some 2wd some 4wd, standard cabs, super cabs, and crew cabs. I've worked on 302's 351's FE's and finally got into the 460's. I had a 79 F150 that I bought from a guy that had a 429 in it with DOVE's and a 4sp. That thing was one mean SOB. I had a chance to get into an 89 and being as how it is so easy to put a 460 in them, I decided to make a mud drag truck. Same way as you Jesse, I went out looking for info and found the old board and earned a degree in the BBF and built my own. Met a lot of friends along the way and count my blessings every day.

Re: how or what got you into BBF'S
The car I have now had a 289 in it that ran 14 flat, had a good friend that was into 460's big time. He had a 69 Mach 1 tube car that ran 9.20's with a TFS A headed 541 and a glide (funny how fast that was then lol)
He had a bunch of junk lying around the shop so I put a stock dished piston shortblock together with some stock Dove c heads, flat tappet, stock intake etc etc, ran 12 flat...........after that it was all downhill.
That was back in 89 when I made the swap.
Pretty much ran mid 10's with a better set of Dove c's and stock 460 crank. Found the old 54 forum and read up. Bought a set of TFS streets bare when they first came out. Front halfed the car and put the streets and roller cam in the 472, got in the 9's.
Got in touch with this Lem feller and its a bad mofo now.

Him and that other Evans feller seem to be the root cause of a lot of bad mofo's.richter69 wrote:Got in touch with this Lem feller and its a bad mofo now.

My first car was a Ford, but it wasn't a hot rod.
Just like every other kid in the world in the '70's I wanted a '57 chebby when I got big. Well, I finally started looking for some cool cars, and realized that chebby dudes were tools.
I decided to break a Ford off in some chebby butt back then, and have been doing it non stop to this day!

Re: how or what got you into BBF'S
I broke a stock rod in my last decent Cleveland, then cobbled together a missmatched junk Cleveland from assorted $hit from the "parts pile". It too broke a stock rod & bent 3 other rods.......that was the last of the 351 Cleveland for me. About the same time Duane had his "straight out of the junk yard" back-up 460 with 1000's of passes on it in his 69 Mustang. That's when I decided the 460 was the way to go. I figured if his simple "rings & bearing" throw together back-up combo had 1000's of passes on it without ever messing with it (over 3000 passes on it when he recently put his other 460 back in) that was good enough for me & the direction I should go.

I had a 5.0 gt mustang and always wanted an older mustang. I ran up on a 70 for sale with a 460 . After I stepped on that pedal I never looked back

Simple. Was amazed by just how huge the engines are physically an ci wise compared to other factory engines at the time.

Re: how or what got you into BBF'S
Some 25 years ago the kid and I were talking . He said it was getting harder to beat the chebbys with his '70 BOSS 302. A year or so earlier we'd pulled a dead core from where it had been dumped by the RR trax, so I told him I'd see what I could do. LSS, (long story short) I built him a 507, coupled it to a reworked C-6, and delivered it. BOSS was gone by this time...but he had a fair '69 notchback and in it went. He only used the squeez once, carried the wheels at 70 MPH on the street...skared'em. Meanwhile...I was working with Van. We did squeez, blowers, alky, nitro, and many combinations of 2 or more of them. Been with the BBF's since.

I gotta say...I didn't know any better . It's been fun....lots of it
Re: how or what got you into BBF'S
Started out w/289/225hp Mustang in school got a good payin job and bought a buddies MR 427 in around 73 and stuffed it in a 57 custom 300,never got it to the track. Put that same engine in a 69 Mach, then in a 67 Fairlane and finally got it to the track. Ran 11.0's Got married and raised 2 children. 25 yrs later and a new wife bought a 71 Maverick rolling that a old FE friend had been running a Carl Holbrook 428 in,it ran 10.50's and I thought i'd never be able to make it run that fast again. So my Dad had a 460 out of a 69 Lincoln that my brother had wrecked. So he gave it to me, and I bought a used set of Dome .030 pistons and h beam rods from a guy, a roller cam and set of home ported Dove c's setup for a roller cam from a mud drag guy. Went to swap meet and took a chance on a 8" coan converter for $300 and a stock c6 w/rev. man. VB. Put a worn out 4.57 ring/pinion in a case and went racin. Sounded pretty good for a junk engine,so I took it down the side road by the house to make sure everything worked ok, and it seemed healthy.(Now remember I had'nt driven anything w/power for 25 yrs). So me and the Buddy I bought the car from took it to Kilkare(Zenia, Ohio)a 1/4 track w/windy hollow shutdown area.(Very short) which he neglected to tell me.I foot braked it and left at around 2500. The first pass was a 10.36 at 129 mph and I like to chit when I saw how short the shutdown was.
I've been hooked on 429/460 Fords since that day in 98

Father did not race...uncles did not race.....I saw FE engine and thought...gotta be the stupidest thing I'd ever saw......take the pushrods out of an engine to remove the intake manifold .15 years later I had some jetboats with 460's...better easier engines i.m.o.
That's it .
Re: how or what got you into BBF'S
I spend a lot of time away from home. Wanted something that I could do with my two sons when I was home. So we purchased an 83 Mustang with a 302 in it and started racing. Boo Boo blew up the motor (some things never change) so I had to decide what to do about a new powerplant. I'm sitting at Atco dragway with my older brother Rich and he's telling me about a Mustang there that runs 10's all day long with a Ford crate motor. Guy was running 10.60s with a 514 crate motor, right out of the crate
I was sold. Dropped in a 514 crate motor--17 passes later Boo Boo blew up that motor
Fixed it and got nearly two years out of it before?? Yea, Boo Boo again.
Sooooooo, I asked Lem to build me a "Boo Boo proof motor"
So far so good.
See you guys at the track.
Bruce

Re: how or what got you into BBF'S
I was in college and new I wanted to get into cars eventually. I mean I was into them since I was like 10 but never bought one. As I grew up I noticed that everyone had chevys. My Dad was really never a real car guy, but he never really had anything good to say about GM products. It wasn't a daily discussion or anything. It is just how it was. Then my best friends brother who was a GM freak bought a 302 mustang. He beat the shit out of the car and after about a month of owning it he said he was a Ford guy. I said why. He said the Ford product was built so much better and he finally owned a car that didn't leak some type of fluid all the time. He Hates chevy now. Anyway, that was 15 years ago and had a little influence on me. When I finally had a good job and was able to get a car, I found my Comet that already had a big Ford in it. I was like, cool, the bigger the better. Thats when I found the "site" and reallly learned how good the BBF really was. Now I educate chevy guys on how crappy the BBC really is.

Re: how or what got you into BBF'S
My first car was a 71 Torino with a Cleavland. I wanted the biggest engine I could find so, a 460 was obvious. I purchased a 429 from a local salvage yard for $50.00 and rebuilt it with a 460 crank and trw pistons. I purchased a new Holley Carb that had a factory defective rear float bowl (it was thin as paper) that ruptured and burnt the Torino to the ground. I pulled the engine that sat covered on a big stump in the yard for 5 years. I purchased the Cougar that I still have and put the motor in that. My first day at the track with little tuning experience it ran 12.62, I thought I had set the world on fire, this was in the early eighty's and I was about 19 years old at the time. I ran this motor for about 10 years and with a 150 shot of nitrous got it down to an 11.02. I really beat on that motor. I went to my current stroker motor with Alum CJ heads and the roller cam deal similar to what a lot of guys on this forum run in about 1989. This motor is still in the car and still runs as good as when new. The original 460 that I had in the car has now been rebuilt and the shortblock is in my 88 F 250. I have nothing but good things to say about the 385 series of engines they make great power and last longer than most engines. I'm glad to know the power of the 460 and to have the great group on this forum to help when I have a brain fade or just need a little advice.

Re: how or what got you into BBF'S
Mine started about 20 years ago with a Hotrod magazine article... It had Kaufman Engineering putting a 460 into a fox chassis. I thought "man those cars are fast with a 5.0, a 460 would be ridiculous." I was right!
I took me 5-6 years to finally get a car and a motor and another 4-5 to get it running. There have been time I've wanted to get rid of her, but I figured "why?" Ive spent all this time/money on this car why would I want to start over to get right back where I was at now. So Ive had her for 14 years now, longer than Ive had a wife! (she helped tow it home when we were dating).

That's funny. I bought the same kit back around 1990. 750 bucks. I was the first kid on my block with a 460 powered 79 coupe. Nearly stock 460 with TRW dished pistons, unported D3 heads, and a torker II intake went 13.99 in my '66 Galaxie, 12.92 @ 111 in my coupe, and it is still in my pickup truck towing my car trailer.
My first car was a 390/4 speed Galaxie, and one day my machinist sez to me, "Have you ever thought about building a 460?". And that was that.......
