slicks? need some new shoes!
ok guys i need some tires.these m/t's are beat to hell and almost nothen left to run.they been good tires so tell me your opinion on other brands.one other thing i want opinions on is tubes.i have always run them and hear a lot dont and 60'better that way.i dont want to put air in them every round just cuz not tube.the softer better hooken tire would work best for me cuz i dont race a lot and age gets them before anything for me.this set is 5yr's or better old and at the very least 200 passes, more like 300. lets hear it!thanks

Re: slicks? need some new shoes!
Just bought my first set of Hoosiers from Philip Oakely and I like um a lot. Got the same air I put in um over 3 weeks ago, no tubes, no soap.
They hook too........... I'd suggest a stiffwall, at least mine likes um anyway............

I just put a set of Hoosiers back on my car. I tried some M/T's and they worked OK too. Hoosiers have always held air best for me. They seem to like a little more burnout. Your results may vary.

Re: slicks? need some new shoes!
I just switched from M/T's to good years and I like the good years better so far. The M/T's didn't last too long, time will tell if the good years do. My new good years don't leak with soap, the M/T's wouldnt hold up for more than an hour. I've never ran tubes.

Re: slicks? need some new shoes!
What sizde tire are you using? I've ran Hoosiers forever. The 14 x 32's never gave any problem. The 16 x 33's C07 were great when they first came out but seemed to have issues with them as I bought newer sets. They definitely liked a harder burnout. Recently I put on a set of M/T 16.5 x 33 stiff sidewall takeoffs from a buddy and they worked great. Just get'em smoking and they are ready. I plan on buying the M/T when I buy a new set. As far as lasting years I can't really say. If you can store them somewhere warm in the winter I think any of them should be OK.

Re: slicks? need some new shoes!
first i would check to see if the race series u want to race has a spacific tire requirement.reason im saying this is a friend put on goodyears he did the burn out and they told him to take them off.he had to put M\T's on or go home because M\t sponsored the series he was runing.
i bought the goodyears at a 150.00 savings though i dont know how they work just yet?M\T tires are a safe bet IMO.....

I've got Hoosiers on my Tbird .They're the best tires I've run on my cars. I've got them on my Mustang too now. It's been sitting under the carport all winter with no tubes or soap and they're still up.

I get mine from Chris Barker. They ship out from Hoosier and I have them in about 3 days normally. I would think Phillip could hook you up in the same manner.

Re: slicks? need some new shoes!
How much tire do you really need? If your car is heavy, I would suggest stiff sidewall tires as Jon stated. Stiff sidewalls will always hold air better.
I prefer something that will repeat. Do you bracket race or heads up?

Here is my take on tires...
If you want a durable tire...go with M/T or Hoosier.
If you want a consistant tire...go with Goodyear.
If you are looking for a tire that doesn't leak...put tubes in it.
I can tell you one thing....the stiff sidewall 15X33 M/T is a heavy, 60' killing mofo as compared to a 15X33 regular sidewall. I have 115 shots on the set I have on now and they will go 115 more with no problem but, they are about 9 lbs. heavier each as compared to the softer sidewall and are a 107 3/4" roll-out, vs. about a 104" for the softer ones. Neither one of these tires seem to be as consistant as the #1984 GoodYears...14X32"....at least on my car.
Just a few of my observations...

Re: slicks? need some new shoes!
bracket if anything but dont realy care for it.the car is sure not heavy at 2600#with my fat ass in it.it's a little hard to hook compared to 4-link cars i've ran with so i'm looken more for a better hook than anything.i need better 60'and new tires are a good place to start but i dont know about stiff sidewalls for me.i'm at 1.23 best now and gota do better.if i footbrake it'll spin pritty bad.transbrake at 4200 is about all it'll do and leave good.4800 and it starts to get ugly but will 60'better.i woulda went more but didnt have any higher chips and i dont think it woulda stayed in my lane. these short srtoke struts and ladder bars are something else to tune.Curt wrote:How much tire do you really need? Re: slicks? need some new shoes!
I've run Goodyears, and M/T but I like my Hoosiers the best so far. Although I run the 29.5 x 11.5W which is a stiff sidewall tire with about 13" tread width. I beat the hell out of the sidewalls on the Goodyears. With your light car you might get by. I quit running tubes and did the soap thing. They only leak a few pounds in a few weeks. The set I ran without the soap would leak down a few pounds in a day or 2.

We always ran a Hoosier on our door car. Never bigger than a 14x32 with about 900 hp. Ladder bar car. You might need to loosen up the front end a little. How much travel do you have available?

Re: slicks? need some new shoes!
strange strut with 3"stroke loose as they get.i think it works better the harder i hit it.the frontend dont come up much at 4800,maybe 2".on a tnt track with beat to hell tires it's hard to tell.lol.if i realy heat the tires the do ok but they gota be slacken.Curt wrote:We always ran a Hoosier on our door car. I dont think you can get a good handle on a car that has wore out tires and an ill prepared track. Its all a guess. We used to take our car to Navasota because the track was so terrible. We figured, if we can get it to hook here, we can race anywhere. It worked well

Drag slick choice pecking order (in my opinion anyway) is #1 Hoosier, #2 M/T, & Goodyears only as a last resort.
