Timing chain and oil pan questions
.
More noob questions... Gonna order my oil pan from Summit to swap my 460 into my '93 Ranger, and I plan to swap the timing chain since it's that far apart. It's just a stock 460 and I want the straight up timing.
Will either/both of these work? Are any parts other than new gaskets needed?

And is this the correct oil pan? Will I need a different oil pump? (I have a front sump pan now) Is there a better place to buy it from? (forum sponsor?)

Re: Timing chain and oil pan questions
make sure to get correct pump pickup to match the pan. I dont use timing chains that have less than 9 keyways, when degreeing the cam i find straight up actually is out as much as 5 degrees, but usually 2 or 3 degrees. I seem to find chains are out more in the last year than ever before.

i missed your oil pan link, you will need a rear sump pump i believe. I do notice it says it fits 1979-1995, im not sure if that means years of mustangs or years of 460s, i assume mustangs?

Thanks for the reply. A 9 key way timing set is beyond my capabilities though... I'll have to start with a straight up set for now.

Get a better pan, something like a canton or moroso with baffles and a tray.

Get a one piece pan gasket too, it will make life a lot easier.

timing chain
about 7 years ago i ford machine shop owner worned me about timing chains not made in the USA. he has found numberouse manufactures to be machined wrong and recomended degreeing the cam to make sure where it was . i had bought a cloyes doubleroller and it was off 3degrees retareded at the straight up marks .the crank gear was machined with 2 deg adv and retard slots , but that = 4 degrees cam advance or retard .so not much room to play with . he recomended a ford motor sports dble rollor and it was right on. so i would recomend checking it to be sure????

I would check with Lem on this one. Awhile back he has some good deals on Ford Racing oil pans and timing chains. Maybe check the For Sale section for his ad.
