Timing chain stretch
I have the 545 down for some maintenance and have a question regarding the timing chain. The engine only has approx 40 passes on it. The chain was a new Ford Motorsport double roller unit when installed last October. I sent the cam gear to Comp and had them drill it for double pins. When I installed it, it was snug. Today, when I took the front cover off, there is 5/8" deflection. The engine is a mech roller 810lb spring pressure.
Is it normal to have that much wear? Can I just put a new chain on my gear set? I have always been taught to change the whole set, but I need the double pinned cam gear. What chain might be my best option?

yes you can just change the chain but 40 passes I would just reuse it, they all will stretch about that much anyway

Re: Timing chain stretch
I've seen 100K mile street engines with chains that looked the same. My concern was that it had so little time, yet was stretched what I consider quite a bit. Is there a chain that might stretch less than the FMS one?

Re: Timing chain stretch
The chain should have ''play" when installed. If it doesn't , cam bearing and main bearing wear can result. Often times the "play" only affects cam timing by one degree or less. ( forward and backward movement)

Re: Timing chain stretch
The German manufactured chain is the best chain out there ... I can not remember the name.
Timing chain p.n.
If you are looking to just change the chain summit carries the replacement chain .It is a Cloyes part number 9-134 .I have the same timing gear set as you it was a direct replacement .Doug
