'99 Mustang spindle nut question...
My daughter's '99 V6 Mustang appears to need a front wheel bearing. We bought one, and after a little research, we discovered that we need to torque the dang thing to about 258 foot lbs. We found a torque wrench to use at Ellen's family business (heavy equipment), and then a little more research revealed that the OEM folks recommend that you replace the nut. The bearing was about 47 bucks, and the fu&%9ng nut is about 47 bucks. Is this true or B.S? I know you guys will know. I would not be surprised if it is true, because my machinist told me that he did an LS-whatever Chevy motor and spent 500 bucks just for the bolts. Thanks in advance. Remember, my daughter is driving this thing, so I want to do it right.

i'd think it woulda had a nut with it if a new one was needed.i have replaced them a few times, used and new,and never used a new nut.it's been a while but i sure dont recall 258lbs on one either.that type spindle started on the 1994 model mustang so it's been out a long time.fabio should know, where's his hero ass when you need him!

It would appear that the 47 dollar nut was a typo in the store computer. Ellen found the correct one for 10 bucks at the store next door. We're going to change it today. The 258 lbs of torque is correct according to all of the info I can find.

Probably 258 inch pounds or 21.5 foot lb's.
Or tighten it by hand to the German spec to seat the new bearings, then back it off, snug the nut back up where it still spins free, and put in the cotter pin............

We got it done. No more roaring noise going down the road. We also added new front pads while we were there. 258 foot pounds is easy when you have a 3 foot torque wrench that goes to 600.
