shifter question for TH 400 in 94 mustang
Bought a new TH400 w, JW bell from JW with reverse VB and brake. I know I need a shifter too match but do I get a shifter with the cable coning out front of rear. Rookie question, I know. Im really in Iraq For almost 4 years so I can look at the trans to determine and I want to order the shifter. Thanks Royce

It depends on how you want to route your cable and where the cable needs to penetrate the floor. A rear exit will usually use a little longer cable since you have to make the turn to route it back toward the front of the car. No right or wrong answer IMO.

x2,i think if a shorter cable was used a rear exit would work pritty well.i just got my tci with a front exit and a rear with short cable woulda worked better for me.i think the rear exits were made for rail's?Treeyasoon wrote:It depends on how you want to route your cable and where the cable needs to penetrate the floor. You just want to be able to make big turns in the cable. A new cable will turn pretty sharp but will not work as well when it gets a little older. I use a front exit in our fox body and have zero troubles. In my old Maverick i had a rear exit cable and it worked better but I had the shifter mounted at an angle pretty high over the tunnel.

Re: shifter question for TH 400 in 94 mustang
A rear exit cable shifter does sometimes work better on full chassis door cars (vs a front exit) in situations where the driver prefers a relatively high shifter mounting/placement & also if there is a good amount of engine/trans setback. This combo can sometimes really put a short front exit shifter cable in a bind trying to make the two tight curves.
On the other hand a high shifter placement can actually can help the rear exit cable because only one looping bend is needed. And after the cable exits the rear & loops down & back forward the cable height is usually pointing directly right at/around the shifter arm height a lot of the time.
Precision Performance Products makes one of the nicest drag racing auto shifters I have seen. Super light weight & thin, damn nice.

Dave that's what i was thinken when i was getting the tci in my car.it's a door car like your sayen and i mounted it pritty high too and rear exit woulda worked better with less bending.when i was looking to buy one i noticed the rear exit tci had a longer cable, figured it's for a rail, wish i'd called to see if it was offered with a shorter cable.
