injecting nitro/methanol
I have been waiting for 4 weeks due to rain outs to make a shot on this nitro/ methanol mix Anyway just thought I would share my experiences so far.
I got an accurate hydrometer so I know my exact percentages I am mixing etc. A 12 % mix increased the idle rpm 700 rpm over methanol at the same barrel valve setting so I richened it up just to satisfy my curosity. Richening the barrel valve until the idle egt was 350-400 degrees did not budge the rpm.
Nitromethane supposedly carries 52% of the oxygen required to burn and does not require this amount of oxygen from the atmosphere or head ports, so it required shutting the butterfly to bring the idle down so this must be true. Anyway it smells just like a top fuel car with that small a percentage and the go fast pedal is like a stick of dynamite when you touch it . I will report back if I find a dry race track this weekend.

Randy,
Check out this site. Go to his "Nitro notes" and spend some time reading. I have seen this guy posting for a long time on HRE and he seems to know his stuff. Very good reading for anyone on injected alky or nitro.

Re: injecting nitro/methanol
That's because nitromethane doesn't exactly burn like gasonline; it detonates. It has more explosive energy than TNT.KY JELLY wrote:I have been waiting...to make a shot on this nitro/ methanol mix A 12 % mix...the go fast pedal is like a stick of dynamite when you touch it .
If you think your engine responds like "a stick of dynamite" at 12%, just wait until you get over 50%. By the way, DO NOT try to start the engine on a 50% nitro mix, nor for that matter shut if off with 50%. Unless, of course, you want your heads a few pit spaces over or you blower atop your race trailer, lol.
Have fun, I'm not far behind you.

Re: injecting nitro/methanol
So, what ign. timing will this tuneup require? I certaintly do not know........a question that begs to be ask i.m.o.

Re: injecting nitro/methanol
Guy who tried to dyno my motor and set up my fuel system messed with it some on a BBC......that he was able to dyno (lol), they added 15% and put an ass load of timing in it and it gain like 75 hp, he wanted to try 30% but the engine owner said no lol.
The M5 pretty much wants the same or a degree or two less than plain meth, but its not a huge gain in power over plain meth.

Re: injecting nitro/methanol
David I actually got my hydrometer from Spud and talked with him on the phone about running it. He seems to be very nice guy.
There is an old wives tail that floats around I have heard that you have to richen up x amount for every percent of nitro you run , but Spud said and its written in his articles that you do not have to richen up until you hit about 33% because the specific gravity is so much heavier on nitro and that it is automatically richer when you use it in percentages smaller than 33%.
Paul a friend of mine builds superchargers for John Force and he had warned me about that so I use the fuel shut off to kill it even though I am running a small percent I don't plan on running over 20 % if that , If I can run 4.89 I will stop there .

I was just doing that and dropped a valve lock on the shop floor and it broke so I am gonna be on a parts mission tomorrow . I can see another sleepless friday in the works

Re: injecting nitro/methanol
Spud advised me to run the same plug I was using 3934. It is supposedly harder to light , but I am on the border line on compression to run it because it will detonate easily . The flame speed is supposed to be faster than gas when it does light however that may be, pressure or ignition spark or timing.

Re: injecting nitro/methanol
Well ouh, harder to light should be a about a better box and coil........KY JELLY wrote:Spud advised me to run the same plug I was using 3934. But then again.......Spud be knowing it all .

Spud Miller is a helluva nice guy. And a wealth of info.
I love his website AND he has just about cornered the market on juicing up a Super Mag ( mallory )
You might also give Darrel Makins a call over at Under Pressure performance. He came very highly recommended to us for flowing/setting up fuel systems.

Re: injecting nitro/methanol
I agree with you on the ignition Lem , but I will switch to a mag before switching msd box. I do not plan on running enough % to require an ignition upgrade now.

Re: injecting nitro/methanol
This could turn out to be some damn interesting testing. If it turns out some chassis tuning is needed because of added power, it will likely have to take a back seat to the more important task of getting the engine jetting & timming safe first.
Years ago you could tell by the smell some of the TOPMA guys around here were trying some precentage of nitro. But you could never get them to confirm anything or talk about it.

Lem, sorry I didnt mean to assume thats what KY had, in fact i knew he didnt have a mag.
What I meant was that among his many other skills Spud is Very good at making those mags output very high. Which is a good thing because it is getting hard to find people to work on those mags anymore, and they still remain popular due to their low cost and relatively high output if done correctly.
sorry...

Re: injecting nitro/methanol
1st try went well other than track conditions everything is wet and damp around here, dew getting on the track etc. One of the chebbie guys that always runs the quick 16 made 2 passes before I did he usually runs 5.0's and 5.35 was the best he could get said the track was slick. So we cut the percentage back to 9 % dropped the launch rpm to 3600 and ran a 5.16 they announced it was quickest pass of the night
It moved around a little on the launch and rattled the tires from about half track on. The engine sounded good and clean all the way through. Plugs looked good as well with no signs of detonating . We decided to park it because of the track conditions
