hurt a head today...
Hi,
We had the second pulling event for 2011 here today. New frame performed well on some bad track conditions but unfortunally we destroyed a TFS A460 10 bolt cilinder head.
Broke all the bosses from the intake stands and the exhaust stands pulled all the threads out.
Still finished on a 3th place.
Here is a video off almost the full class.
I was running last.

Tractor looks real good, hate that your suffered the damage. It appears there is a healthy class of racers.

Frank,
I hate to hear about the damage. It sure sounded good.
We need to get that announcer to come to Windy Hollow Dragway.
Heck...you probably have the thing fixed already....

Yes, WW rockers titanium intakes .904 lifters.
Think that we found the problem. Converted the heads to the titanium valves this winter, installed longer stand bolts but there were short helicoils in the heads...
Will post some pictures tonight.

Glad you found the problem Frank, but I'd bet it wasn't the kind of present you wanted for your birthday.

Frank,
Sorry to hear about your problem, that hurts! I do agree that your problem is the short heli-coils. I've seen that before.

They have to be at least .750" long.

Frank I have changed thousands of heli coils out for keenserts, the advantage is helicoils are a piece of wire that when installed and torqued down will push the wire sideways and put force on the sides, and alot of times when you remove a bolt the heli coil will come out with it....and the side force breaks the object it is in
The Keensert is a solid steel insert with locks when installed it is locked in solid and when torqued it pulls up like it was part of the metal, not some wimpy wire trying to hold.
They come in heavy wall or thin wall in any size. I keep them in 10-32 up to 3/4" they also come in fine thread, and I think they have them in metric also....
do some looking over where you are and see you should have a place there to buy them.....
good luck
Randy

Re: hurt a head today...
You know that is the difference between drag racers and truck pullers. Most drag racers are trying to build a 600 cid BBF on a $100 budget and truck puller guys aren't afraid to put 3 BBF's in their tractor and blow the shit out of them trying to make a full pull. Bad ass dude. Sorry about the bad luck.

Re: hurt a head today...
I don't know when the change was made but the TFS exh rocker studs now have 1.300" of underhead lenght.

I use the FORD MOTOR COMPANY cylinder head inserts which are readily available from many sources and normally are used to thread into the thermactor holes in the ends of Ford production cylinder heads.
I have used them HUNDREDS of times for valve train stud locations of all different heads, (To even move the stud location somewhat or the stud angle as well as using them for better anchoring). They are blind and are over an inch long and are easily machinable to a shorter length if necessary. Threaded 5/8 - 11 outside and 7/16 - 14 inside.
