9.3" rear differential Empty 9.3" rear differential

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but here goes: I've got a '72 mustang with the entire driveline from a 1970 T-bird. I thought the rear end came out of an Explorer, but I was wrong. My dad thought it was a 9". He was wrong. It's actually a 9.3", tag WGA-A. It's a 2.80:1, 31 spline rear end. Does anyone have any knowledge about these? The only thing I've been able to find online was the Olds/Pontiac 9.3", are they the same as the Ford?

Since information is difficult to come by, I was kind of hoping to learn exactly what I have. It's been rebuilt and works great so I can't see myself swapping it out simply to get a 9". Can anyone point me to resources to learn more about them?

What you have is a 9 3/8 inch rear end. There's nothing "bad" about them other than a lack of performance parts available for them. If it works good don't worry about it. If it breaks or you want to make a gear change then a 9 inch center is the way to go. It will bolt into your existing housing and allow you to choose any ratio and locking device available. Google Ford 9 3/8 and there is lots of info.

Perfect, thanks Mike. Most of the info I found referred to the Pontiac/Olds rear end and I wasn't sure if the Ford was the same. I appreciate the info.

Alright, apparently the 9.3" is also referred to as a 9-3/8" and, to confuse things further it's also called a 9-1/2" confused . Wish I had known that, I wouldn't have posted another question and I'd have just searched one of the other references. Sorry for taking up space.

Don't worry about it, its good to have info on the weird stuff on the site.

Post up some pictures of the rear and some links to info. it may help others figure out what they have.
