Doing better, just missed the 5's.
Finished my license passes tonight, I am getting used to the car. I was leaving at a conservative 4600 rpm, and spinning a bit out of the hole, as my best 60' was only a 1.378. I know this car has the power, even at the cars weight, to pull a 1.31-1.33. My best two passes of the night was a 6.04 and a 6.05. Best mph was 116.58. Car weighs 3420 with me in the car.
I think if I can get the 60' down, this car has a 5.9X in it. I think as of right now, the 6.04 should be a 9.4X in the 1/4 mile I believe.
In any case, now that I am getting more used to the car, I need to start working the suspension to get the 60' down. I have strange double adjustable shocks with strange hypercoil 150 lb springs. Any ideas on how I should set the rear shocks? I followed the strange instructions and started off with the recommended settings. The tire I am running is a 29.5X11.0, because I was spinning a bit I kept decreasing the tire pressure, eventually to 11 psi.
Another note, I notice the car mph's better if the car is no hotter then 170 or so when I pull to the line. Any hotter and the mph falls off.

More tuning and better air = 5's

according to the time stamp on the slips you haven't even made those passes yet!!!
I don't see any reason you can't get the 60' down to the 1.27-1.29 range. That would put you down in the 5's easy.

I turned some more 6.0s today. Now that I am comfortable with the car, I am going to start suspension tuning. I had a couple friends help me set the preload on the anit roll bar properly, and next week I will start adjusting the shock settings. DA was close to 3000 today, car still turned some 6.0s at 116mph.

This is off topic but do you have to turn left in the shut down area of that track? Sweet ride. Love those P-51's.

Re: Doing better, just missed the 5's.
The first turnout is to the right, just before the oval track. The shut down lane does veer to the left a little, as you can see in the picture, but you still turn right on the second turn off, on the other side of the oval track. Then you have to drive around that thing and work your way back to the first turn out to get your timeslip. Kind of a pain in the ass, but Irwindale is a good 1/8th mile track for tuning and such, and I go there every Thursday.
Next Thursday I am going to play with the shocks. I have the compression in the middle of the adjustment range, but I have the extension way too tight. I am going to try to run the car with the extesnsion loose to plant the tires harder and see what happens.

Re: Doing better, just missed the 5's.
I worked on the rear suspension all day yesterday. I adjusted the compression on the shocks to 5 clicks (range is 10) and I really loosened up the extension (it was on 8 clicks out of 10 firm) to only 2 clicks. The car can definitely rise a lot easier now, which should plant the tires harder.
I adjusted the lower control arms, one was almost 1/2" longer then the other (don't ask how I missed that) so I adjusted them both to the same exact length, then verified both rear tires are sitting in the exact same spot relative to the body (which they are now). I also took apart the anti roll bar, adjusted the preload with the car on the ground and 180lbs worth of weights in the driver seat. The preload was way off.
Anyway, I am hoping all of the above will help, going back to the 1/8th mile track for more testing next Thursday.
