when using a front engine plate, is it necessary to use the "O" ring or is sealant good enough?

Larry: I used the O rings and sealant on the pump side of my motor plate, and just sealant on the engine side of the plate, as there's no provision for O rings there - works fine for me.

I use that grey stuff you used on your 3rd member lol.

It aint that bad. I didnt have too many issues gettin my 3rd member out either when I used TA31 on it, but I do just use the cheap plain clear silicone now..........just that much easier to clean off.
