Getting closer to potential
I'm still pecking away at it and working on the setup. Just tweaking the suspension and tune a little at a time.
New best last night for the Bird. 5.250@ 132.5 1.165 60' @ 2150' DA 2800 lbs
Lost 2nd round though in the monthly $5K. Cut a .004 light and was gonna be dead on with 2 or 3 based on the '60 and 330'. But then got loose about 450' out. There had a been an oildown a few passes earlier and I think they missed something. It made a move to the center and I thought I was going into the other lane (and get speared by the dragster coming up fast). So, I got out of it and slowed to a 5.30@ 128. Oh well, it was a good tuneup for the IHRA Team Finals in Montgomery in 2 weeks.

Thats flying, good thing you're a professional driver.

yeahhhhhh buddy..... set that there bucket valve using the 'whack it" method Must be working. Ain't had to buy a screwdriver yet.
Green oil doesn't look like a milkshake either.
Side note: learned this. When you step up to a #1 pump and need a large return pill size, the "normal" leakdown numbers no longer work and the new ones don't make "book" sense.
With a 0.5 pump I always ran leakdown in the 24-26% range using anywhere from a 66-98 return pill. With the #1 pump I need a pill in the 112-120 range + a high speed + an extra idle bypass. With that setup if I set the leakdown at 24-26 it stumbles and falls on it's face. Get's hot really quick as well. Way too lean. I set it with the 'whack it" method and it responds as it should with proper heat. Checked it with the leakdown gauge and it shows 41%. I'm thinking the extra large pill size bypasses so much fuel that the BV needs some help at idle.
Good Job
Way to go David, that is hauling the mail.

Good job David, glad it's finally getting down there. I would like to come to Steele on a TNT night soon and run the car some more. I ran 8.34 at Huntsville last Friday. I want to get in the 8.20's bone stock before I start tinkering with it. Steele is 400ft lower than Huntsville and with some 40-50* air, it should fly.

Congrats Dave you are doing your usual good job
I bet you can trade that leak down gauge for 3 full sets of snap-on screw drivers . In all seriousness.... I've observed some sharp cookies use the "whack it" and other simaliar methods with great results.
Methanol, gas, carb, or injection it is my opinion that if an engine acts unhappy....it is unhappy regardless of what some gauge says.
Re: Getting closer to potential
any vids of this car running ?

None yet. I'll be at the track in Montgomery Sept 29-Oct 2. You should come out and visit. Bring the video camera and get some shots.
Re: Getting closer to potential
David,
It sounds like you started with a good setup...and just keep steadily creeping up on the ultimate tune up.
Keep the old leakdown tester anyway.....it is good to get things close enough to start the engine, if you ever need to replace a barrel valve or have a new setup. I think you have the idle mixture procedure nailed down.
Nice work!
Keith

Moodyblues wrote:Good Job David. Good to see you back in a door car.
I like this car.....But, I also really liked my dragster. If we had some sort of series around here similar to the Jeg's Super Quick that Phillip, Kristina, etc run I would still have it.
The door car is easier to load/unload at the track, but more of pain to work on. The dragster was easy to work on, but a 45 minute deal to load/unload.
Re: Getting closer to potential
David ,I was really impressed with the way your car went down the track at the bash. It's a super nice car.Real impressive the #'s it is running too!! Congrats
