Early style big block { c9v3 heads and block }
Untill the time I am able to complete my new A head nitrous motor I am going to put a factory 429/460 in my car. I plan on doing a little head porting, carb, manifold, and some shorty headders. Probaly a few other things. My question is I found a c9 engine [heads and block]. The guy says it is a 460 but if it is a 429 I don't really care. The motor is great shape for a core and was running when pulled. Doing a rebuild on this motor is there anything I might need to look for. I checked and found out those engines were like 10.5:1 compression. I would hate to build some good power and then the rods give on me or something else. The stock motor I have had before came out of a 76 thunder bird. It had dooe rods. Of course the 8.0:1 compression and D3 heads are a little different from what it looks like this motor to be. I want a good hone and new bearings and gaskets. The heads and valve terrain I have covered. Did those engines have a stud mount instead of the bolt type rockers? Would the rods need to be changed? Could I throw some Eagle SIR rods in place with out doing anything else?

Yea I know that they are 40+yrs. The ford book I have and from what people have said is that the dooe rods and the truck rods where the factory desireables. I didn't know if the first rods could handle todays power capabilities.

Those rods are limited to 6200 RPM from what I've seen. I broke one at 6400. Keep the RPM's down and they're good to go.I wouldn't try to turn it real tight.

only thing that will make it a 429 is the crank and pistons...

I figured to keep 6,000 max, but would like a little lower rpms, just to drive a fun big block, and go bracket racing. I ain't gonna wait and whatch my car sit till I finish the big motor. I figure a good carb, good home port job, a torker II manifold and good little set of headders with the factory compression should net me a decent 7 sec 1/8 mile car. Thanks for the info

my first 466 had cj rods in it with arp bolts,shifted at 7000 many times.the d1ve block cracked from the main to the cam but rods never give any trouble.
