Not knowing what CI your looking at, the stock blocks will work good, but, I strongly suggest going with an A-460 or Eliminator block, in the long run, I think it is the way to go. I went with a stock block on first build, now I am going with an A-460 on this build.
With an aftermarket block, you would have the 18 bolt head design, weather you use them or not, you can bore safely to 4.500 on A-460, and 4.600 or 4.650 on eliminator blocks. On a stock block you can usually go to 4.440, possibly more if sonic test is good. With an aftermarket block, you can always go bigger later.
Aftermarket blocks have better oiling, and 4 bolt mains, helping with cap walk.
You can get an A-460 block from Lem, shipped to your door, or I think Keith Fulp still has a new Eliminator block for sale in the For Sale section.

You can bore an A-460 block to 4.600 and sometimes more.

Re: help with picking a block??
Unless you are straped for cash and looking for a mild build, go A460. I did all on my scj motor with a d1ve block and noticed after about 2yrs of use I had a little cap walk. That was with just main studs. Thank God I never pushed the 200 hp nitrous I had planned for it. It would probally have worked but I rather be too safe than sorry. That and I had $2,200 worh of Scat internals and good pistons in it.

They are some very good blocks, but if you are very serious about the NOS,I would also be serious about a performance block. Good Luck w/what ever you do.

for street and milder motors (under 750) the stock stuff can and does perform fine. more than that time to get a A460 or Eliminator block if you want IRon or a C&C Aluminum one if you in the market and can afford the aluminum stuff.

Somebody told me that the older blocks should be able to handle atleast 1000 to 1200 horse

Re: help with picking a block??
the d0ve block with 4bolt caps can stand some good power.my block is just a 2bolt,not filled, and has been good for 5.40's n/a in a 2600#car.it comes down to what cid you want to start with and cost to make the stock block hold up.if your plans are for a big shot in a heavy car get a new block, you'll be glad you did.

They have been pushed that far before, and early or late they are basically the same. The deal with putting that much power in one, is just how long do you want it to last? Your ability to tune, and maintain is a determining factor here. A bad tune, and especially with the giggle juice, is a recipe for scattering a whole stock block build. The A block or Eliminator are good investments, and if you are going to spin this thing to any kind of serious race rpm level, the better oiling of the race blocks is going to be worth the investment. Why take chances with a bad foundation?

What Captian Mud said ...... The aftermarket stuff is much much better investment for the money, but the stock stuff can take alot too.fast89gt wrote: Somebody told me that the older blocks should be able to handle atleast 1000 to 1200 horse
